third-party and voluntary non-voters in US elections will always infuriate me in a way that the biggest Trump fetishists will never be able to. A Trump voter in even the reddest state has a much higher chance of their vote affecting desired change, when compared with literally anyone from the former two groups.

First past the post is an absolutely terrible system. I'm endlessly thankful I'm *not* in a country that uses it. I've ever once given my primary vote to either of my country's major parties. Were I voting in this or any other US election though? I'd vote for the dems without the slightest bit of hesitation. I could list a hundred things that shit me about the party's policies. I don't *like* them. All of this wouldn't have me hesitate in the slightest though, because I'm not a delusional dork.

To not vote or to vote third-party as a 'protest vote’ is the ultimate fuck you to the millions of people whose quality of life is made materially worse by a GOP govt. A Trump voter is at least driven by a somewhat understandable feeling of fear, worry, anger, or whatever. I respect that more than having your vote be driven by your fragile conscience or your desire to Take A Stand in the LEAST EFFECTUAL WAY POSSIBLE.

To vote third-party as because you in your heart of hearts believe that your candidate will win is simply a level of delusion that I will never ever even remotely be able to entertain.

If you fall into either of these groups you forever forfeit your social license to complain about Trump or any member of his weird gaggle of creep orbiters.

Kamala could take EVERY remaining vote and the US would still be utterly absurd.

Whilst I really do feel for Americans right now, there are way too many very “that's it, I'm moving!" posts written in a way that very heavily implies that the author will—immediately and without question—be authorised to immigrate to [insert name of highly desirable country here]. Nobody else speaks like this! (Fellow) leftists especially will happily speak self-deprecatingly about how fucked America is 'til the cows come home, but when push comes to shove, the “we're the Default Country and everyone wants us" attitude seems to be so disturbingly pervasive there. I ultimately see this as pretty integral to the US's demise, in its current form.

Sigh. The two academics consulted for this article, who both very heavily implied that this mistake was the sole domain of incompetent first-year CS students, have proven that they’re incredibly irresponsible and/or clueless themselves. What an utter mischaracterisation. CrowdStrike is at fault here, but let’s remember that basically every piece of even moderately complex software under the sun has these issues. Software is fucking hard.

Incredibly disappointing to see this behaviour from this industry.

Even if the journo selectively quoted them, these direct quotes should never have been given, no matter the context. Just utterly irresponsible.

“IoT vendors should be forced to open source code for products they EoL!”

Entirely self-serving tech-utopia fetishism that does very little to solve the actual problem.

The vast, vast, vast majority of users will not be helped by the fact that some random bloke with a *very* customised emacs setup fixed some probably-backdoor-level-of-incompetence-tier security issue in the firmware of an Asus router from 10 years ago.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t people overstating the ability of current gen LLMs. This doesn’t mean that LLMs aren’t overhyped. The history of tech, let alone the realm of possibility, is more complex than “is it or is it not like the last thing that everyone got a bit too excited about?”

I will continue to die on the hill that equating blockchain hype with LLM hype is an absurdly naive view. If the entire history of blockchain tech has shown one hundredth of the current in-production real-world value has LLM tech has shown in the past two months, I’ll eat my hat.

I held a level of respect for people that spoke out against the absolute BS level of attention that blockchain tech got, compared to the almost-zero cases where it’s use was justified over…a centralised database. The weird and blatant salivating by the tech VC class that clearly yearned for a crypto-ancap “utopia” was just the icing on the cake.

I have now realised the unfortunate reality. At some point, the people that are actually competent at assessing the usefulness of a piece of technology were joined by people just wanting to look smart and contrarian, but were instead basing their blockchain skepticism on entirely the wrong indicators. Right for the wrong reasons. But now we’ve ended up with a sizeable contingent of people that are cocky post-blockchain hype curve, that are looking for the next overhyped technology to apply the same logic to.

I understand that Discord is probably good for it’s intended audience, gamers, but for years there’s been a whole lot of misuse of it as a general ‘IRC replacement’. It’s irked me to no end, because the UX and branding is so gamer-centric that I just don’t enjoy using it. It also often causes the communities that reside there to take on some negative ‘gamer community’ traits.

So I’m really excited to see Discourse further move into that space. We needed this.

Third-party Twitter clients were such a nice little island of little to no user-hostile design.

When I come across something that hasn’t been actively Dark Patterned to death, I feel a deep sense of relief. Like a huge weight has been temporarily lifted from my shoulders because I don’t need to watch my back.

I’d hate to be in the position of a client app developer right now and won’t make light of their situation, but I’m hoping that some of them take their expertise and apply it here.
