I just didn't expect the cable to be completely severed :D
I removed the sensor, soldered the wires back together, put heat shrink on and filled the cavity where the mantle used to be with hot melt glue, that should melt in place and seal the splice once the heat shrink got heated.
I installed it again and it doesn't measure open circuit anymore, yay.
(Didn't test it with the ECU yet, still missing a battery)
Out of interest, I recently opened the old ECU to see what made it act up...
It opened a bit easier than I remembered from last time...
Also my fingers were a bit wet from where I gripped it around the edges...
I turned it on its edge and pulled it apart a bit...
And a small torrent of water came gushing out!
It didn't drip, but actually _flowed_!
It was water damage! AGAIN!!
(Probably didn't seal it properly after opening it last time.
But it explains the drained battery.)
But! Interestingly, the P042A-05 DTC still persists (Catalyst Temperature Sensor Circuit Open)
So something actually seems to be up with that sensor or the cabling.
So as of right now, that just™️ leaves getting a new battery, checking&fixing that sensor and make an appointment at my garage for them to fix a hole in the exhaust and let them do the TÜV check.
Now I only need motivation and free time to align to actually do some/all of that ^^"
(Also, a neighbor already carefully complained ^^")

In the meantime, I tried bringing up the old ECU again.
And the car did really strange things, like turning on the radiator fan a few minutes after connecting the battery without me doing anything else, not even turning the ignition on.
@frickler01 kindly lent me his OP-COM so I could teach-in the new ECU.
Which worked on the first try.
It (jump) started perfectly \o/
[2025-02]: I had a tiny spark of motivation to at least disconnect the battery.
As feared it was already at only a few Volts. Damn.
I disconnected it and charged it carefully for a few hours, at least.
After that, any motivation was gone again.
But still weird, it shouldn't drain that much, as I had measured my car drawing less than 1mA in its deep sleep state iirc. (foreshadowing)

As it was cold again and I was fed up with my car in general, it just stood there over the winter months.
I suspected that I bent the PCB too much during the last disassembly and a solder joint around the MOSFET controlling that relay cracked and later another FET lost connection or sth like that.
But mainly I lost all motivation to even look at it for now, I was pretty fed up.

It ran without a hitch and I even dropped off @techbeard at his home, instead of driving straight home.
Well. Just a few meters after the town sign of my home town, the motor suddenly died. Great.
I tried to start it again, it would crank no problem, but not start at all.
So I called @patagona
"Hey, about that towrope... You told me, you still haven't had a chance to use it yet, right?..."
Turned the key and yup. Nothing at all happened. It didn't even try to power the starter motor.
But the ECU was still responding via CAN.
According to the DTC codes it has something to do with the main relay not properly switching on (https://www.motor-talk.de/forum/p0685-hauptrelais-stromkreis-spannung-zu-niedrig-t7259577.html )
I debated my options and with some supplies and help, I bridged the relay with a paperclip.
And to my surprise, the motor sprung to life right away. (Still in limp-home-mode due to the DTC codes, but I was used to that by now)

Suddenly the warning light came on again. P042A-05. This time another sensor value went invalid.
Maybe a marten found the cable tasty or sth. like that I thought.
Drove to the #MRMCD24 in Darmstadt without any issues and parked my car somewhere further away for the weekend.
Went back to the car, turned the key half way and thought something was already off. Normaly the fuel pump would make noises by now... oh no.

[2024-09]: Opened up the #ECU again to troubleshoot the P0190 fault.
Bent the PCB a bit while trying to open it, due to excessive sealant.
But I couldn't find any fault on the PCB at all, not even any moisture...
Turns out, only a pin in the connector was bent. Didn't have to open it up at all. *facepalm*
So I put it back together with a bit less sealant, but approximately still enough to be watertight (foreshadowing).

11.3.2025 06:09Wer geht heute noch alles so auf die #embeddedworld?Yesterday, the parts finally arrived \o/
So I went straight to assembly.
It took me around 2-3h of placing parts, reflowing, reworking (surprisingly few joints) and soldering the THT parts.
I quickly tested the board. No shorts, all voltage rails look good and the DCDC controller tries to do something (not sure if I intended it to).
All good signs for a future bringup!
Here's a 50x timelapse of the assembly:

(And of course, they're smaller than I thought, and I had already expected that)
I also like how you can see the individual layers in the bigger plated holes.

The routing of the bottom half is done.
Also, I double checked many things and did so many small tweaks over the last few days too.
(Component values, resistor values, rough voltage ripple simulations, etc.)
I've populated the respective shopping carts and after sleeping a night over it, I'll hopefully order the PCBs and components tomorrow ^^
13.2.2025 00:50Oops, all vias :DThe routing of the bottom half is done. Also, I double checked many things and did so many small tweaks over the last few...Sooo, almost done with my first attempt of layouting the first half of the board.
All connections have been made while hopefully keeping all the layout recommendations and constraints in mind.
Still need to have a second look at it after getting some sleep and also add all the thermal and stitching vias.
Then it's off to layouting the "UI" lower half of the board.
