It compiles over 600 studies, offering an overview of how climate change affects extreme weather.
Likelihood/severity of extr. events:
📈 74% of cases
📉 9% of cases, mostly cold extremes

Global planetary health is approaching the high-risk line.
But solutions are within reach: "satellites, super-computing capacity for data storage & analytics, AI", he says.
With the upcoming COP16 on biodiversity, we stand at a pivotal moment for ecosystem preservation, one of the key planetary indicators.

For the second expedition of the FAR-DWO project, Laia Romero will join colleagues from Unidad Tecnología Marina (UTM, CSIC), Facultat de Ciències de la Terra UB and Ifremer.
The crew set sail this morning from Reykjavik, heading to the Denmark Strait Overflow to recover moorings: multi-instrument sampling units deployed last year to monitor hydrographic properties over the long term.
Stay tuned for more updates from this exciting mission!

However, the conditions are expected to change due to global warming, with 90% of its effects occurring in the ocean. This will impact water temperature, currents, and other biochemical properties.

Integrating penguin field data with these indicators, our statistical model maps how oceanographic features affect penguin habitat suitability. Combining indicators provides a comprehensive view of habitat suitability.

Simultaneously, we used Copernicus Marine #EO datasets to map environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, water depth, and chlorophyll—a key indicator of marine biodiversity and ecosystem health.

This connection was at the core of one exciting project with National Geographic’s Pristine Seas where we provided scientific data to support the extension of a Marine Protected Area “Frente Valdés” in Argentina. Plankton was used as a marker for a rich marine environment along with ocean properties and climate projections to identify current and future Magellanic penguin habitat.
