We identify two false assumptions underlying hyped claims about linguistic agency of LLMs - that language is a complete "thing" than can be modelled, and that web data capture everything that matters for it.

We argue that LLMs lack embodiment, participation, and precariousness, and illustrate this with discussion of "algospeak".
