After my mother died, I inherited the cast iron lamb cake mold. Every year at Easter, we bake a lamb cake and slaughter it and eat it (did I mention we met while volunteering with a haunted house?) Yes, there’s usually strawberry jam in the neck to make the slaughter more fun.
So that’s how The Slaughter of the Lamb became our Easter tradition.

Thirty Easters ago, the husband and I had just started dating. We went to Easter dinner at my mother’s. He saw the lamb cake, and wanted to have some after dinner. Little did he know that my mother’s lamb cake decorated the sideboard for at least a week after Easter, and didn’t get cut until it was hard and needed strawberry sauce (thawed frozen sliced strawberries) to moisten it enough to chew. We don’t know why, it was just tradition.
