Is this me being dense? I had a conversation with a guy I don't know very well yesterday, and he told me about his breakup. He kept referring to his ex as "they". It felt too awkward to ask about it, and I don't want to assume anything. Why has this crept into our language where it leaves the other party in the conversation guessing? Not that the breakup is better or worse, based on the other gender but it left me with question marks.
