Then you need to spend an hour both admiring the new car on a video call and deflecting the topic from coming around to what you purchased, which is not in the same weight class as a new car.

Just finished “Blood Rites: Origins and History of the Passions of War”. I wasn’t as much of a fan as a lot of people. The basic argument is that war is an attempt by us to recreate the experience of humans being hunted by long dead predators. Men are soldiers because they’re more disposable than women. I find the concept interesting, but it’s ultimately kind of an unprovable thing. It reads like a scientific research paper but it can’t live up to those expectations of rigor.

It’s a good airplane book, something to distract you from the boredom of flight. I wouldn’t take it too seriously though. #books

Just finished The Wright Brothers by David McCullough. Good book, but why it might be interesting in these modern times is how much the invention of aviation relied on public institutions. The Smithsonian providing the Wright Brothers with a reading list is what allowed them to even start their research. The precursor to the NOAA allowed them to find Kitty Hawk as a testing area with sufficient wind and soft sand for crashing. Folks in #copenhagen do a lot of public transit great, but they suck at the “hustle the fuck up” part of getting on the subway. Multiple times I have had to gently push people because they either get off the train and immediately stop walking, blocking me. Or the train doors are beeping and they’re still walking at an absolute snails pace even with lots of room inside the car.

I of course learned subway etiquette in Chicago. I once stood in front of the door blocking it and had a woman knock my phone out of my hands and tell me to move my ass cause someone with a real job was coming through. Not “whatever your dopey looking ass does for a paycheck”.
