Aaaand to honour that history, and keep the achievements and functionality, #GNOME2 brought us, #MATE forked it 11 years ago and provides what #GNOME developers worked on for most of its lifetime to future generations and all those who wanted to keep using their desktop as it was instead of relearning how to use it

It made the GNU/Linux ecosystem more free with #GTK, it wrote the Human Interface Guidelines we - and many other projects - use and the software, MATE builds upon
Whether you’re a fan or not, GNOME is undeniably an important part of free software history

Starting with the #Hellsingør municipality, #Denmark has decided to ban #Chromebooks and #GoogleWorkspace at #schools as the processing of students' data using these services does not comply with the #EU's #GDPR data #privacy rules
Now these schools need a #privacyfriendly, preferably #FOSS alternative
I'd suggest the #MATEDesktop (surprising, I know^^), I will write a post about why later

#MATE == a #privacyrespecting #alternative for your #desktop 🛡️
#META == a bad company, that is still selling your #privacy online 👁️
#EVIL == just an idea for the next rebranding
The #MATEDesktop gives you more #privacy on your #computer, deleting #Facebook gives you more privacy online

The Linux desktop wouldn't be the same without you!
#Windows8 was the most unpopular #Windows version because its design changed away from the "traditional Windows design"
#Windows11 does this as well by moving the startmenu to the center. Ok, that might not sound too dramatical, but if #Win11 is a success #Windows12 will look far more different
If you want to #keepYourWorkflow it's time to #switchToLinux and the #MATEDesktop. Many #MATE-distros use a windows-like panel-layout with a menu on the lower left corner

A company like #Microsoft could make #lighter and therefore more #responsible software but they decided that selling more new devices is better than reducing #ewaste and saving the #environment
#MATE on the other hand was designed for 10+ years old devices and is getting even lighter since so you don't need to buy a new PC every 5 years
What do you think? Is not caring about #waste in 2021 a dealbreaker for you?

10 years ago, Perberos, a developer from Argentina (and #Arch-user btw), released the first version of #MATE
Since then, the #MATEDesktop has evolved by constantly improving its components while preserving MATE's traditional concepts and adding support for new technologies such as #GTK3 a few years ago or #Wayland and #Meson in its latest and future releases

It took me some time to notice that mate-themes has a different release cycle than all other MATE components
The missing new components:
➡️ mate-backgrounds 1.26.0 https://pub.mate-desktop.org/sources/mate-backgrounds/1.26/mate-backgrounds-1.26.0.tar.xz
➡️ mate-icon-theme 1.26.0 https://pub.mate-desktop.org/sources/mate-icon-theme/1.26/mate-icon-theme-1.26.0.tar.xz
As said above mate-themes 3.22.* is out for quite some time now, but you can find its latest version here:

A traditional GTK desktop with title and menu bars or a simple one with headerbars and a menu button?
Note: Some DEs like Cinnamon or Budgie are less complete. In this case it depends on what's installed besides that:
XApps or MATE apps?
-> traditional Cinnamon
GNOME (style) apps?
-> simplistic Cinnamon
The same applies to stand-alone WMs (i3, etc)

In the beginning, source code was considered scientific and later art. People were proud of it so they made no secret out of their work
Than something went wrong and companies started degrading software to a product
With #SaaS, #ads and #tracking everywhere software is no longer a product - YOU are!
Don't want to be a product? The #MATEDesktop and other #FOSS projects still respect you and your #privacy
