For Craver, ontic explanations are really existing mechanisms, while epistemic explanations are representations. For Salmon, ontic explanation represents real causal relations between explananda and explanantia, while epistemic explanation names factors which make the explanandum expectable.
These two distinctions have nothing in common except the name, and Craver's dogged insistence to the contrary cannot change this.

The joys of #philosophy: The new SEP article on causal approaches to explanation conflates Craver's distinction between ontic and epistemic sense of explanation with Salmon's earlier distinction between ontic and epistemic conception of explanation.
