No idea if she's fediverse-enabled or I'd tag her.

It's reasonable to assume that we will be using IP networks to communicate between space and the Earth for the foreseeable future.

Many IP protocols assume that clocks are synched across the network (typically with NTP).

Time dilation due to mass is real. Time flows more slowly on the Moon than it does on Earth.

Even if we're using Sols or Muns or whatever to measure days, everything is going to be on Earth Standard Time until at least the first interplanetary revolutionary war.

IP stacks for space applications have some interesting constraints. For example, the worst case RTT for a functioning link can be measured in weeks! Two weeks, in the case of Earth↔️Mars, which happens every two years when we’re on opposite sides of Sol.

This is an absolutely metal business decision made by OpenDNS (Cisco).

Court orders in France and Portugal are requiring the big open DNS resolvers (Google, OpenDNS, CloudFlare, etc.) to block resolution of a small list of domains for anyone in those countries.

OpenDNS seems to have decided to not implement the blocklist, and instead will just not answer any DNS queries from inside those countries.

Change implemented on a Friday evening, for maximum surprise.

Web app developers:

There's a high likelihood that the first time I see your "welcome to a new version!" popup I'm going to exit out of it, because I came to get something done and I don't want to click through your tour of new features first.

But you should make it possible to find that again, because I might actually be interested later.

This is a lesson Canada can learn from others. Rather than continuing down the privatization route we're being pushed toward by certain politicians, perhaps we can look to our neighbours to the south and see how well that's going for them. They really have taken to heart the adage, "if you can't be a good example, at least be a horrible warning."

This is extremely exciting!
marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=171

OpenSSH is gaining the ability to rate limit and even block clients based on connection behaviours, such as repeated auth failures.

This doesn't completely obviate the need for services like fail2ban, but it might mean no longer needing that overhead on every single host.

I run into XY problem thinking in my day job all the time. I've always attributed it to our human tendency toward superstition; we don't know how something works, so we make up stories for ourselves to explain it. Most people have such a profound lack of understanding of how computer software actually works that this thought pattern is not surprising.

I'd never thought about how much it would affect other fields, though.

I feel incredubly lucky that we have much more sane policies surrounding access to controlled substances here in Canada. But I worry that the current medication disaster in the US could lead to large scale exports, causing shortages here too. The US really needs to get its act together when it comes to critical medications.

This is definitely an unforced error, but just goes to show that complex systems are hard. I'm not in the least bit surprised that a new record type in the root zone broke an import, but the implied lack of monitoring at an organization like Cloudflare is astonishing.
