This has made me think that the people complaining about the high environment costs of blockchain weren’t really objecting to the environmental costs, but the lack of value presented by blockchain.

I was (to some extent) one of those people. And I have some internal hand-wrangling to do, as I have to make peace with the reality that I’m willing to inflict environmental harm for the sake of personal gain and economic value.
