“Ending poverty in all its forms everywhere” is at the very top of the UN's development agenda.

But because the UN is not measuring poverty adequately, the fight against poverty has been pushed to the sidelines.

In the NYTimes I published my proposal for what the UN can do.

No generation ever experienced better living conditions than our generation today.

And no generation was ever in a better position to make progress against the big challenges that are ahead.

It’s crucial to have good data on suicides if we want to improve suicide prevention.

But the available data can be confusing and difficult to interpret.

To help you find the data that is appropriate for the question you have my colleague @salonium wrote an in-depth explainer on suicide statistics:

In the 1990s and early 2000s the number of deaths from HIV/AIDS increased year after year.

As my colleague Saloni Dattani shows in our Daily Data Insight this increase ended in 2004, thanks to the introduction of antiretrovirals.

UNAIDS estimates that a million people's lives are now saved by antiretroviral therapy each year.

GiveDirectly is a charity helping the poorest people in the world.

It does this by making possible what its name suggests. They give your money directly to people in poverty.

If you can give a $100, it would make a big difference to someone else givedirectly.org/

In the last two decades, the world has made very good progress against global poverty.

Except at the very lowest cutoffs. The very, very poorest people in our world live on extremely little and this situation has barely changed since 2010.

A fact that doesn't get the attention that it deserves.

One of my main motivations for founding Our World in Data was to overcome the mad reality in academia that much of the most important research and data is locked away behind paywalls.

I wanted research and data to be a public good, accessible to *everyone*.

If you find our work valuable, I would appreciate if you would pay us a little so that we can make good data and research accessible to everyone.
