I made a pair of hyōshigi today. Very pleased, they are loud and bright and quite compact. One is skinnier because it had a small crack. I was about to glue it but when i tested them it split. Sounded much better afterwards.

Not sure what wood it is, dark hardwood that smells flowery with hints of vanilla. The string is the least ornamental possible, cheap off-brand paracord.

My new idea is to use Roman miles instead of imperial. They’re 1,479 km or thereabouts (it’s an approximation and wasn’t fixed anyway) so i can just round it to 1,5km. Easy to convert to sane measures.

Now i just need to find an imperial measurements user to impress/confound. “Oh, you don’t mean Roman miles? What empire are you referring to?”

Roman miles make more sense than using 996 and 9/16ths Rods or whatever a mile is based on.

Strava were the first to go. I realised that i always run the same speed and also i don’t need details.

Also started moving some WhatsApp groups to Signal, we’ll see if i manage to convince e.g. dad and in-laws to move over. Seems doable.

The real trick would be moving off icloud, but still syncing e.g. photos between phone and computer. I’m paying for icloud so i guess there’s even a budget.
