If, like me, you're struggling in the relentless heat of the Glorious British Summertime and counting the days until blessed autumn, perhaps this will help you think cool thoughts for a moment's respite.

The Cotswold-Severn-type chambered long barrow was constructed in this form in around 3460-3400 BCE, although there was a smaller structure here that predated it.

The tomb's massive monumental facade should make it feel imposing, but today, with just the misty trees and the busy, chubby robins for company, it felt like a sanctuary.

A place very close to my heart. Something for - the majestic Ring of Brodgar in .

The 27 stones remaining (from what might have been more than 70) come from at least 7 different quarry sites. I love the interpretation that the Ring wasn't a monument created in one dramatic construction event, but was changed over time. Did it materially reflect the push and pull of regional power play? Raising or removal of slabs as a show of force, for performance not for posterity?
