Here on the internet, this can look quite different, but the effect is the same. When an individual uses tone-policing, they are conveying to the victim that the victim is lower on the invisible power hierarchy in this particular space than the tone-policer. It is a tool of oppression, often utilized by annoyed or otherwise inconvenienced privileged people to silence and exclude those with less privilege.
Here on our lovely new home in the #fediverse, tone-policing can make the entirety of Mastodon feel exclusionary. Please check your posts before you publish and make sure you aren't silencing people. Consider whether you are appealing to shared goals and inviting cooperation when you intervene or if you are dictating from your perception of your authority.

What if universities elected to host and accept submissions to their collection of digital history? I know some do this with artifacts/primary sources, but what about actual #digitalhistory projects?

What if universities elected...@TreyBastian@glasgow.social @JeromeySims @histodons This is absolutely right, and I likened it yesterday afternoon (also in convo with Jeromey on this topic) to if I dropped a hot, 1890s-style, pamphlet at my university. No guarantee a copy would survive unless I personally preserved it. But we don't have a way to guarantee preservation on the web. Things change, servers become obsolete or dilapidated, tech changes and updates. How can I possibly keep a thing I cannot hold in my private collection? Even I, the owner and creator of such a thing, do not have the promise of permanent access to it via the web -- similar to owning home videos on VHS or something something.

This is a hurdle for permanence in scholarship and one that clearly needs to be addressed.

I can buy any number of things IRL and own them forever, but none of them are web space. Web space must be maintained monthly/yearly or exploited by a site paying those fees.
My smart tech partner @JeromeySims points out that I could own a slice of the web if I owned the physical tech and connection itself. What a massive hurdle to ensure my permanent ownership (or space, really -- I don't need to be a settler in the internet space).
This is like if I spent years building a house and, if I didn't pay my mortgage one month, someone came and burned it and its contents to the ground leaving only pictures of it on archive.org. #histodons @histodons
