No joke of the day: FrACT₁₀, the Freiburg Acuity & Contrast Test michaelbach.de/fract/ now features Dithering for contrast optotypes. This allows the full physiologic range on standard displays.

Quite unspectacular: The “Xmas Colours Illusion”
The two greens are actually identical, see michaelbach.de/ot/col-whiteXma

Matsunaga, Ito & Kanematsu recently discovered a _kinetic_ variant of the Orbison illusion, which is markedly stronger. Enjoy!

The Freiburg Vision Test FrACT₁₀ michaelbach.de/fract/ has learned something new: Assessment of grating contrast thresholds. You select spatial frequency and patch diameter (in Settings>Contrast), and it will hone in on the threshold. An approximate Gaussian window smoothes the grating edge. Error diffusion allows for accurate threshold in spite of 8 bit limits. Downloadable as WebApp. For giggles try 'Autorun to target contrast'.

Dear colleagues:
Calendar events can sit in an *.ics file, fine; I can create one and it works. However, I want to generate a clickable link on a website, possibly using the `webcal:` protocol, including the event als ical *string* – not linking to an *.ics file. Is this possible at all?
It would be so much easier to create "add to my calendar" buttons this way.
Thanking you for your thoughts in advance!

This "old hat" michaelbach.de/ot/mot-pigeonNe generated the comment (thank you) "this is the Moiré effect" – No, I thought, but then began to think… Well it might… Hours later, I had added new colour selections to the little app. These, IMHO, argue against the Moiré explanation; so still the explanation of the “Stepping feet” illusion michaelbach.de/ot/mot-feetLin/ obtains, methinks.

Look at these questions:
·All plants and animals have DNA
·The oxygen we breathe comes from plants
·The cloning of living things produces genetically identical copies
·By eating a genetically modified fruit, a person’s genes could also become modified
·All radioactivity is human-made
·It is the mother’s genes that determine the sex of the child

More on the teaching material for the book:
The back cover shows an apple. Scanning that leads you to Wilhelm Tell, you know, the apple story (but without showing the apple is on the head of the son), only to lead on to Schiller for a very German thing… :). More BS all around… Just what you need to learn when, as a migrant, the major hassle is having to deal with bureaucracy!

Just helped a friend who is preparing to give language courses for migrants based on a book by Verlag (a German publisher). First page: a QR code for additional on-line material, leading the the play store (!), and **no explanation anywhere** that this does not help you on iPhones. To someone non-computer-savvy is is a full show stopper. Yes, here market share of is larger than , and maybe in migrants more, but revealing major incompetence by said publisher. Disappointed.

I had written on using unicode in ggplot PDFs: michaelbach.de/2020/03/22/ggpl. However it didn't work today with more exotic unicode ♀♂. Library "emojifont" doesn't plot shapes I like. Digging deeper, looks like `Cairo` has changed (or my error). Whatever, it is easier now: theme(…font…) not necessary, but the ggsave command needs font to properly embed like so:
`ggsave(filename='xyz.pdf', device=cairo_pdf, family="Arial Unicode MS", …)`. Needs `library(Cairo)`, of course.
