Just received the (digital) diploma for my MFA in creative writing (SNHU). It was a wild ride, and I've got a novel I love out of it (near future police procedural where policing has drastically changed).

Now, I just need an agent 😅

Recently, I came across some curious technology that purports to be able to put your brain on "do not disturb" so that you can fall asleep easier. Being the writer I am, I wondered, can I use this in my near-future settings? I explore the idea here:

Just got the email with the final proofs of Crimeucopia: Great Googly Moo! in which my mystery novelette "Bear and Bird in the Snow" will appear when it releases on the 19th.

Very excited for this to come out. I wrote it almost two years ago for Murderous Ink Press's LGBTQ mystery anthology, which sadly fell through.

It looks like you can pre-order it now from Waterstones (not up on Amazon yet).

I don't like types systems. They're inherently rigid and have more holes than they have categories. I'm a firm believer that people are not boxes, so why try to fit them in one?

On today's , I go over Ellen Brock's four writer types. The algorithm saw fit to show me her videos, and I was skeptical at first, but I think that she understands the limitations of such systems.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder released on Netflix last Thursday, and I watched it over two evenings. It's a good, short, self-contained murder mystery with a headstrong young woman looking into the murder of a classmate. The direct and driven acting from Emma Myers is great.

Give it a watch if you're into YA murder mysteries that play fair with the viewer.

I want to share stories with you. I run a blog for my fiction, but there's very few places I can point you to read said fiction. Yet, at least. So, I want to put stories up on occasion.

But there's a big problem with me doing that, and I have to talk about it first. Yes, this is a post about large language model generative AI. And yes, I'm frustrated.

I've had The Shapeshifting Detective on my to play list for a while. It's a murder where you're a detective who can turn into anyone you meet. Using the guise of other people, you can gain information (and get caught) easier than as just an outsider.

Oh, and it's entirely acted. I enjoyed this game immensely, and wanted to share it all with you.

What does death mean to a writer?

Recently a friend of mine passed away, and it got me thinking about what death represents to someone who writes mysteries. I think about every day, almost like a coworker, and so my response to deaths is probably not typical.

On today's , I take a look at death and how I view it (and why that might be).

Father's Day is a special day for me, but not for the reasons you might think. It's an important day in my thesis novel, and I spend it finishing a draft of said novel.

Father's Day is a touchy subject for a lot of gay men, for whom many have strained relationships with their fathers. So, here are my thoughts on the day, on fathers and being a gay son, and finishing things.

The Last Murder at the End of the World is a closed circle murder mystery before it is science fiction, even if it's set in a utopian island society after the collapse of humanity. All of that window dressing serves mystery purposes in Turton's latest novel. In today's , I Analyze this homage to classics like Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.
