Content warning:cw: Linux rant

Why Linux desktop is not taking over the world today...

A couple of weeks ago I created a new native Linux (software) RAID array using mdadm. Mildly annoyed I couldn't find a GUI utility to provision the RAID array and prepare the disks, but okay. I'm comfortable with the terminal and Bash, no biggie.

It's nice that Windows 10/11 also allows for (limited) software RAID now on desktop hardware that doesn't support hardware RAID, so I kind of expect that other than having to create the RAID array and provision the disks from CLI, it should be at least as good as Windows now that it's created. Right?

Then today I rebooted my Linux desktop for the first time since creating the RAID array. And post-reboot, the volume previously contained on the RAID array is showing as a blank disk / no data. And mdadm says (I'm paraphrasing here) "there is no RAID array here." WTF?

So after poking around some forums and Reddit I find I can recover all my data by re-creating the RAID array with the same parameters, and like magic my array is back. And apparently there's a timing issue when the system boots, and the drives that are members of the array haven't been loaded yet in the bootup sequence, so the RAID manager says "oh well, all the RAID members appear to be offline so I'll just delete this dead array." And I need to run initramfs -u or something to make this change persist to where I don't have to re-create the RAID array and recover my RAID volume after every time I boot my computer.

And I love Linux! I've been working with Linux servers and desktops at work for three decades now, since before it was Linux -- since the days of Sun/SPARC Solaris and HP-UX (old-school UNIX for you young'uns).

So all is well now, but I can't stop thinking about how this experience would have played out if this 'learning opportunity' had happened on my Mom's PC. Or my wife's. No thank you!

The State of Windows Desktop 2024

Same scenario, I’m building out a brand-new physical desktop PC where the physical OS running on the host hardware is Windows 11. I have files on a USB 3.2 external hard drive that I want to bring over from the old (Windows 11) desktop to the new Windows 11 desktop… should be no problem, it’s the same Windows 11 OS version on the old PC and the new PC. Right? RIGHT?

Nah bro, the old PC has an Intel® Core™ i7 CPU and therefore an Intel core motherboard chipset, where the USB external HDD device is enumerated as a USB Attached SCSI (UAS) storage controller. But the same device on my new Windows 11 PC with an AMD Ryzen™ 7 CPU and therefore an AMD core chipset, is enumerating the same USB external HDD as a Sabrent USB storage controller (not UAS). And the HDD partitioning looks all messed up in Disk Management / diskpart and I can’t mount the volume with my files on it.
I move the HDD back to the old PC, thinking maybe the drive just died from being powered off and moved, but nah. I plug it back in to the old PC and everything’s fine.
Why the heck is this a thing in 2024? I can’t even move a USB external HDD from one PC to another PC running the same OS?

The State of Linux Desktop 2024

I’m building out a brand-new physical desktop PC where the physical OS running on the host hardware is a Debian 12 desktop. I have files on a USB 3.2 external hard drive that I want to bring over from the old (Windows 11) desktop to the new Debian 12 desktop… no problem, surely Linux has worked out USB removable media by now, right? RIGHT?
No problem, just disable UAS drivers in the kernel by creating a new config file in /etc/modprobe.d/disable-uas.conf, just need to grab the Vendor ID and Device ID from the output of lsusb -tv, and then rebuild initrd with update-initramfs -u to disable UAS in the kernel, and then HOLY CRAP I don’t want to walk my Mom through this remotely over the phone if this were her desktop PC and she just bought a new USB external HDD.

Now haters, hang on a second for the next post for some balance.

Buckle up folks still using Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), there's a brand-new security patch for the Kerberos PAC validation protocol. The vulnerabilities are detailed in CVE-2024-26248 and CVE-2024-29056.

Similar to the Kerberos updates released in 2022-2023, further action is needed to remediate these vulnerabilities after installing the patches (now included in the April 2024 and newer monthly cumulative updates (creating Registry keys and values).

Tired:
Wired:

The focus with DevSecOps is bringing security processes into DevOps workflows, whereas SecDevOps is more of a "security first" approach focused on cultivating a security culture across the entire DevOps team.

I love the idea of security not just as an add-on or a gate to be cleared, but rather a "security first" mindset and culture embedded throughout the DevOps lifecycle.
