Can someone explain to me how (from a user perspective) tracking works in non standalone VR headsets? do you still need to install a bunch of cameras?

i have only ever had a meta quest (first the first one and now the meta quest 3) and from what I remember from the early days of VR you needed a full room with like 3 cameras and shit to do tracking which was very annoying, is that still the case for headsets that don't have cameras in the headset itself?

im wondering about how the bigscreen beyond does it's tracking
