With the #BCWildfires, I've been looking at #AirQuality monitoring apps. Each shows different air quality measurements, depending on modeling & monitoring stations (screenshots taken minutes apart, from a few hours ago):

•FireSmoke: 1-10 µg/m³ (AQI ~2-40)
•AirNow: AQI ~51-150
•BCGov: 0-25µg/m³ (AQI ~0-70)
•IQAir: AQI 46-137
•PurpleAir: AQI 63-194

In order from my least favourite to most:

1. FireSmoke: experimental, predictive forecast model of smoke only. Heatmap-style; doesn't indicate monitoring stations

2. AirNow (USA): based on 24hr index, using algorithm that averages last 12hrs of measurements, many stations. Heatmap; doesn't show location of stations

3. BCGov: 1hr average, few stations; no permanent monitoring stations in the Okanagan

4. IQAir: real-time, moderate # of stations

5. PurpleAir: real-time, many stations (w/ confidence % of sensor & link status), can switch between Canadian & US AQI indices, & switch between μg/m³ of particulate matter or AQI scale

This is what the current situation is here with the fires. Air quality is off the charts, multiple communities in the interior are on evacuation orders and alerts.

#Squilax has been partially burned down (there's been mixed reports and gossip, but as of this morning the band office, and #Quaaout lodge still standing, but the gas station and some homes burnt down). There's been an extreme lag with news and updates about the #Shuswap area, as the focus has been on #Kelowna, and evacuation orders for reserves weren't posted on the #BCWildfire map until up to half a day later.

Many other #Secwepemc reserves are on evacuation orders, and while #ChaseBC is on alert, it's surrounded by orders and road closures. People are stealing and moving firefighting equipment, including the sprinklers protecting the few bridges in and out of communities.

I can't keep up with everything right now.

I have been quiet on here for awhile. I recently left a situation where my mental, emotional, & Indigenous knowledge & labour was being siphoned, while my worth was being whittled down to how much money I can make for others, while not being paid for even 1/4 of the labour I was doing.

It's like a weight has been lifted & my self is starting to trickle back in. I didn't fully realize how much was being drained from me. Since the shift, I've been resting, and gardening, and refocusing. Still working on it.

I need the smell of sagebrush & wolf willow, of skunk cabbage & cottonwood, of valerian & fir.
I need the taste of subalpine balsam bark, swamp & desert parsley teas, steeped in an old pot over open flames by a creek.
I need the taste of early spruce buds, as I walk in crisp late winter air.
I need to see the red of osier dogwood & dogbane before the green of spring.
I need to hear coyotes' calls reverberating off valley walls.

That's the kind of rest I need.
