Realised I never wrote an #introduction so here we go:

Hi, I'm Mike. I grew up in Inverness and moved to London. I've been programming since I could walk, first in BASIC on the BBC Micro then professionally Java, PHP, Scala and Go. I love functional programming.

I work at a company predicting football (soccer) results as a mix of SRE and Platform Engineer - small team, many hats etc.

I'm a West Ham, Ross County and Minnesota Vikings fan. I love painting miniatures and playing RPGs on my PC.

Had a fun incident at work today. Back in the mists of time we'd created an EFS volume for some service and rather than decommissioning...

Had a fun incident at work today. Back in the mists of time we'd created an EFS volume for some service and rather than decommissioning it at the same time as the service we ended up reusing it for a different purpose.

Fast forward to today where we finally deleted the old resources using terraform and promptly wiped the data the new service had been using for some time. Thankfully it was relatively straightforward to create a new EFS volume and associate it but it's postmortem time!

Playing with terraform this week, I've been incredibly impressed with it so far. I've used it to setup an aws elasticache instance...

On-call today, it's funny but Sundays always seem to be better than Saturdays for support issues and requests.I think that's because...

On-call today, it's funny but Sundays always seem to be better than Saturdays for support issues and requests.

I think that's because our domain (Football predictions) has a big concurrency issue on Saturday at around 3pm while the Sunday matches are more spread out.

Maybe we need to do some more autoscaling on Saturday afternoons, I'll have to see if I can find some appropriate metrics to use.

Having a blast playing the new Hitman Freelancer mode. Still a few bugs to be ironed out but it's a heck of a lot of fun!
