Thinking about... What if we had a covid-careful hand-chime group as well as the covid-careful string orchestra?
Chimes are among the most accessible, most immediately-fun instruments to play.
Hence more "catchment area" of potential "masked musicians", hence venue hire more feasible. Could have both groups same evening.
Any covid-careful people around #Nottingham who might like a new little musical adventure?

Actually I kind of want to blog about this - about how my thinking has evolved, what I think might be possible now, and so on. Not sure when I might get around to that. But at least got as far as talking with a friend about it today!

What I've been thinking about is re-engineering _towards_ that direction.
Maybe to build momentum towards a covid-careful orchestra, we'd need some covid-careful other things? maybe just a covid-careful #Nottingham meetup for starters. Cast the net wider, get going, and even if we never found enough musicians in the end, it'd be something good.
So yeah despite the recent lack of posting here, it's still on my mind!

I've been thinking about the future of the orchestra plan.
Since I had the original idea, the mainstream climate has changed such that far fewer people are masking. I think that was already swinging around by the time I announced it, & it's part of why we didn't get quite enough people to fund the costs of the venue I'd identified.
But the covid-carefulness was an essential part of it for me, & I don't want to ditch it just to have "any old orchestra".

There weren't quite enough people to start the orchestra in September like I wanted, and I ran out of steam a bit. The winter was always going to be the "off season" anyway.
Now I've come round to thinking that maybe the orchestra needs to function as part of a wider network of covid-carefulness - which is also something I'm interested in contributing to.
So for the covid-careful people of Nottingham... let's see what's possible.

(limiting factor is money: venue hire money, and me hoping to actually get some kind of wage eventually rather than subsidise the orchestra out of my own pocket :-) )

A step!
I just emailed the venue people to ask about some specific dates in September, for a trial mini-term for the orchestra!
Going by the trajectory so far, I think there's a good chance we shall have enough players by then. I reckon we're currently a bit over three-quarters of the way there already. Just need to keep putting the word about :-)

The tricky thing is, I get the impression that those funding forms are predicated on saying in advance what yr gonna do, which is not entirely in tune with the iterative way I like to proceed! Bit of a "chicken & egg" predicament.
Maybe I can build in some iteration to the funding application. Hmm.

I don't wanna bother people too often, though - when the one thing I _do_ know they want is to play, and things aren't in place yet for that bit.

I don't mean that any online events could be a rival for the main rehearsals, but there are things we _could_ do - like a briefing for orchestra-beginners, or a session on making the most of your practice time.
But right now, I have no data on whether the people who've expressed interest in _playing_ would have any interest in _that_! Maybe they dislike Zoom! Maybe they're out in the sticks with rubbish internet! Who knows?

I was standing up for a while today, & also sat up for several hours last week while writing.
(Backstory here is POTS-alikey post-covid stuff, which had got quite a bit better in March/April & then kicked off again in May. For a few weeks there, I think I'd have had trouble conducting a rehearsal. Have to see how that goes in the coming months & what work-arounds I can invent if necessary.)

18 violins
2 violas
7 cellos
3 basses
of whom _most_ have instruments already, though not all.
I did a bit of estimation on a spreadsheet, informed by "how likely to play" & "how likely to be available on each day". Based on that, I reckon there'd be around 15 players if I started rehearsals now - as long as I didn't pick Fridays, which are by far the least voted-for day. Not _quite_ enough to make the money work, but getting close!

I know how to _build_ it, I'm just wondering about convenient sources of suitable filters and fans which would be available in England.
(Ideally not via Amazon, because of how they treat their workers... but not totally ruling them out if there aren't good alternatives.)
Any info much appreciated!
