I've decided to buy a handful of small keychains with the miniature likeness of JRR Tolkien attached.
When someone does something nice to me, I'll give them one and tell them it's a small Tolkien of my appreciation. 😁

My kids were all like "Hyphenated, obviously!" while my wife and I (both children of the early 80s) thought the closed version more standard. Merriam-Webster, to my surprise, only included the hyphenated form, and SentenceStack showed a 93% preference in its corpus for the hyphen as well.
Now intrigued, I checked Google's ngram tracker. It turns out that English speakers heavily preferred the closed form *until the early 2000s*, when the hyphenated form took off. This spike in its use coincides with the birth of MySpace, Facebook, and other forms of social media.
I find this sort of thing fascinating!

4.1.2025 22:14Been busy dealing with family stuff. But happy new year!Just logging on for a minute to gripe about the local Republican-majority council kicking out the long-time and experienced public library leader and covertly installing their own person who supports, er, banning books.
Plenty of people on an email list I'm on (about a completely unrelated topic!) are praising this move for "protecting children." Haven't these people seen "The Music Man"? Do they not get how they're being manipulated "for the children"?
Argh...
Okay, signing off for a bit.

Okay, so in the latest Honkai: Star Rail main story quest, interesting theological tidbit: Sunday's assistant Mr. Wonweek (in other words, "One Week") turns out to be the old, pre-conversion part of Sunday, while the "Sunday" we encounter is the new, wiser, repentant and converted Sunday. There's an old Christian tradition that views the seven days of the week as representing the old Creation, while the "eighth day" (which is a Sunday) represents Easter and the new Creation. So "One Week" represents the seven days of the old Creation, while "Sunday" represents the new eighth day of the new Creation. And after Sunday and Mr. Wonweek merge back together, Sunday says, "On this eighth day...". Anyway, I thought that was a cool parallel!

They are often depicted as silly, inelegant creatures, but the ones I know are monstrously large, slim and trim muscular, highly evolved dinos that look like the only reason they aren't murdering you is condescension—and they might change their minds at any moment.
Now imagine a flock of 40 or so of these things stalking through the neighborhood like they own it, which they probably think they do. I mean, *I* won't be the one to tell them otherwise.

Sharing this in case it helps someone else: A young person I know was just diagnosed with cyclothymia. This is a condition in older teens that can last up to a year and which *if untreated* will become full-blown bipolar. It consists of mood swings, esp depression, excessive energy, and irritation. But they aren't as extreme as BP, so they might not be recognized as warning signs at first.
If treated, though, it is possible (though not guaranteed) to avoid BP altogether. Taking medication for 1-6 years can get rid of the symptoms (though BP could crop up later in life).
BUT if it is misdiagnosed as depression, anti-depressants might be prescribed—which likely will *trigger* full-blown BP.
So watch out for your young friends!

I'm going to try to spend time connecting with peace rather than browsing social media.

And while I was there, I saw something so cool I had to share it with y'all.
A short distance up in the line, there was someone with hair dyed half pink, half blue, divided right down the middle. I wouldn't have paid attention, but then I saw their sweatshirt was equally divided pink and blue, right down the middle.
And their pants.
And their *shoes*, one pink and one blue.
And a personal bag with the main characters from Lore Olympus on it (who are, for those who haven't had the good fortune to read the webtoon, pink and blue).
I think I found the biggest LO fan in the world. Made my day!

I found Sepia Search, which seems to search a bunch of instances for videos and accounts, but the results returned seem very limited (perhaps just because so few people use PeerTube comparator). Also wondering if there's any practical difference between using PT and say Odyssey (which seems equally limited).
