Altarnun, Cornwall
Church contains a fabulous collection of 79 bench ends from 1510-1530. This, the first to be seen when entering, says: 'Robert Daye maker of this worke & William Bokyngham Curate John Hodge Clerk'. People assume Robert Daye to be the carver but in class-ridden C16 a lowly carver would not be named above the Curate and Clerk. So Daye is the donor who 'caused to be made' this or all 79 bench ends, though the unnamed carver deserves much credit.

Part of a Scheduled Monument that includes three round cairns, two ring cairns and an oval enclosure. The two stone circles, collectively known as The Grey Wethers, are quite similar. One is 31.5m diameter and has 20 upright stones, while the other is 33m and has 29 standing stones. The close proximity of several monuments makes this an important ritual site. 📸 : @morgrugyn with permission

Former Devon longhouse, early-mid C16, with house end ruined, though shippon and passage remain intact and still in agricultural use. On right-hand wall of passage, now the gable end, is a large granite-framed fireplace, with an absolutely massive lintel, which although nicely shaped is probably far larger than was necessary and must have been extremely difficult to manoeuver into place.

Multivallate Iron Age hillfort that occupies the site of an earlier Neolithic causewayed enclosure. Used 1st century CE as the base for a unit of Roman army.
Since 2022 the site has been owned and managed by Devon Archaeological Society. Volunteers carry out maintenance and clearance to ensure the monument's long-term wellbeing. They also take care of its important nature conservation in consultation with the Devon Wildlife Trust.

One of the best peserved stone rows on Dartmoor. Situated on Hingston Hill, the row is 316m long with an almost 3 m tall menhir at one end and a 1.5 m stone at other. Between them are 157 stones, but it's thought there would have been more. At the western end is a stone circle (view from within it) and at the east the remains of a cist. 📸 : @morgrugyn with permission

Motte and bailey castle built 1068-1086 by Baldwin FitzGilbert after local revolt against Norman rule. Converted into a residence in C14 by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives, including great hall, bedrooms, kitchens and a chapel.

Any visit to West Cornwall would not be complete without saying hello to the C15th Mermaid of Zennor. Although she sits in isolation in a sea of mediocre Victorian restoration, she is beautiful, inspiring, and mysterious. She holds a mirror and a comb, seen as symbols of vanity.

A masonry plinth is normally built first to raise the cob off the ground. Ideally, the earth for the cob is dug on site or nearby.
Cob building is currently practiced predominantly in Devon, as well as in Cornwall. These examples are in the south-eastern part of Devon, where the New Red Sandstone gives rise to rich red soils.
