I find a superhero (or supervillain!) flick a success if I make it until the finishing credits. I don't usually feel any enthusiasm, but no hate either. That's why I don't usually get why some movies in the genre are so commercially successful, while others, as this , flop. Yeah, the special effects look cheap (I can't guess where the big budget went doing this), the pacing is quite irregular, it's predictable, it's... Same again. Rinse and repeat.

Second issue of : Dark Patterns, and a new confirmation that Dan Watters is a name to follow in the current comic-book mainstream. Once again telling a Gotham story (check Arkham: The Order of the World, featuring awesome art by Dani), we are presented with a "back to basics", dark and down to earth tale that reads as a -very- creepy noir, helped with a remarkable effort in mood and narrative by artists Hayden Sherman and Triona Farrell.

The classic Legion of Super-Heroes. That is, the Legion before the 5-year gap and the successive reboots. It's hard to believe nowadays, but it came to be DC's second best seller (after Wolfman & Perez's Teen Titans), and the group had a really hardcore "cult" following, Star Trek-style. If you pick just a few issues, it's hard to know why, but it really grows on you. With time and patience; too many members, too much lore. But once a legionnaire...

Sad news for the (not enough to sustain this in the market, it would seem) Rainbow Rowell's Sensational She-Hulk readers. The book will be cancelled with #10. I'm pretty sad about it, as the title has grown on me and I was really looking forward to the next issue.

And, I'm under the impression that, this time for real, the industry is in a really sad state, and you can't give a title for granted... Especially not any of my usual favs, the underdogs.

Good but not really great noir film. Very Coen-bros-esque, with Tarantino touches, sounds too familiar to avoid comparisons... And this is not winning. But anyway it's a valuable effort which gives the benefit of ellipsis when other directors would go for the cheap shock, has pretty good performances, a great soundtrack, and that "texan" flavour which, far from romantizise, is actually pretty grey and it's even explicitly mocked. Honest and well crafted, I can recommend.

Third Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down. Another bonus point for this book is that you don't need to wait for the collected edition, each single issue delivers a part of the history and lets you waiting for more, as it should be. It's effortlessly building a very interesting lore and developing characters on the way in a memorable fashion. The time when this could have been a hit is way past, but the quality remains. For the nth time, just give it a chance.

Second issue of the second Minor Threats miniseries (here I posted about the first one:
mstdn.social/@nevada/111273522 ), not counting the excellent spin-off (which was even better than the "main" series IMO). OK, the general landscape for the mainstream USA may not be living its better moment, so as it happens you have to look at the fringes to discover that yes, it's still possible to make very good books on the superhero trope and regain your faith in the genre.

Jed Mackay, it seems, has finally made it to the top. Not just he's graduated from second-rate and spin-off series, but he was given The Avengers, first, and now he gets to coordinate and write this new Marvel event, using as mains characters he was writing already (Strange & Clea, Tigra & Hunter's Moon, The Avengers). I'm not such a "big events" fan, but I'm making an exception just for this title, which is on a good start.

I can still remember the first time I saw 's cover art for his #2. That old, massive, ugly, battered Batman, covered in rags, one hand with clenched fist, the other one inviting for more violence. It's raw, out of proportion, hopeless, defiant, and it was making comic history. 9 out of 10 (being generous) comics following its steps hit the dirt this cover was elevating from.

There are two flicks that I really like: Dawn of the Dead and, specially, Sucker Punch (sue me). Overall I generally like his visual flair, but his projects tend to be really hit and miss, IMO. And when he misses, he really does. Case in point: the AliExpress Star Wars palimpsest that is , or what you'll find in the dictionary when you search "sh*tshow".

I read the 3 books last night. The bad: it's more of your usual Charles Burns, no surprises here. The good: it's more of your usual Charles Burns, no surprises here. Same time frame and background as everything since Black Hole, same teenage angst, same New Flesh and oneiric imagery, same obsessively delineated *ligne claire* (with some variants this time, with good excuse). Whatever. I'm with Burns through thick and thin, and this hits me as he ever does. Hard.

OK, so it looks like there is not an English language edition for the latest opus available already. I 've found at least French and Spanish editions in 3 hardcover books. But don't despair: a single HC with the whole story is to be published in English next September. I've bought the Spanish edition, and just for this time we, non-English speakers Europeans, have been lucky enough to get this in advance. Which, considering Burns' slow publishing rate, is truly being lucky.

I've seen without having seen a trailer or knowing what it was all about... As it must be. As you should do, if you are a horror fan. We are, I think, living a golden age for the genre, and it may be the one where the most interesting films are being made today. No Disney crap, no "intellectual" brain wanks, just talent and technique. And BTW: all hail . 🧟

After a really entertaining run on Moon Knight, Jed Mackay ended the successful series and started again... Without the titular character and giving the former series' secondaries the spot. A sure recipe for a let down? It seems not. Tigra really is an amazing, underused and often mistreated character, and this is doing justice to her. And the rest of the cast is as brilliant, the plot and tone still kicks it, and we're really in for a treat.

I'll say this after every good issue (and with this one, we have four now) if necessary: if you like classic SH comic books, well written characters and nice art, then the current Birds of Prey series is one you absolutely don't want to miss. Kelly Thompson is writing nothing else than an awesome book, with great group dynamics, an interesting plot, and so competent narrative skills. For the ones still doubting there's something good being published nowadays...

New , this time with art. He's IMO a criminally underrated artist, but I really love his work: professional, expressive, technically gifted, he has a perfect domain on all the facets of the craft. As his work on this book, a special in Warren Ellis' masterpiece, Planetary, totally shows. A masterful composition which sets the tone for the unforgettable tale which we could find inside.

Choosing any of the 12 covers for Charles Burns' Black Hole is easy; you can't go wrong with any of them. But the one for # 11 is the one I pick here, if only because I have always found fascinating its capability to induce surreal, cosmic, ethereal visions with such familiar elements.

One of my all-time favourite characters is the volume I iteration of Spider-Woman. She was the mysterious and really weird Dark Angel, with a villains gallery and tales to match. Sadly, modern iterations had Jessica being the opposite of what was originally intended (make her different from her male counterpart, to begin with), and she's now a bad jokes cracker clown and "comedic" relief, mostly.

This is not bad per se, but Jess is still missing.
