I really want a solar path light that I can switch on using , but I've never managed to find one. Going back to basics, is there a device/project out there with a Zigbee based solar battery system, that could be plugged into a light. Or solenoid (watering), or anything else? It seems like a good platform.

Another awesome example of an company just getting in and doing something great. We need to realise that and development doesn't happen in a vacuum. It can be helped to succeed, or unnecessarily killed off by the environment the country provides for businesses like this.

E.g., make investing in business attractive to normal people by making housing less of an alternative investment, and reduce the cost of labour by reducing the cost of .

It's pretty hard to verify them all up front, but just listing out what they are is probably sufficient to identify the ones that are going to cause the real damage.

Caught Falling in love on this morning, and was thinking it was a nice blast from the past.

The song ended which threw the DJ because he was expecting a 3 minute song, not 1:30. After he commented about how odd that was a Howard Stern clip came on, which threw the DJ even more.

Kids, back in the 90s music came on flat discs called CDs, and, bands would often add before or after the main album.

You would just pay for these once, and lend them to your friend too!

This is an interesting story about activism in East Germany, with the Stasi showing up and laying down the law, but triumphing in the end.

Not sure how to put it in context for now - I guess there are heaps of people doing this stuff, and the current environment seems a lot less hostile, but I definitely feel like it is a risk to put yourself out still. Almost certainly just a conditioned reaction - a little bit to lose has a disproportionate impact.

I wonder if one way to mitigate some of the impact of the big companies in a local economy and society would be to force all companies over a certain size - say $50M revenue, to be listed on the local stock exchange. This would give those impacted a chance to access some of the upside. It'd also create a perverse situation where it might be harder to regulate them, but might be an interesting approach.

Some of this is deciding on what kinds of manufacturing/innovation to persue, so we can build the shared infrastructure and bring down the risk that Redflow was killed by.

Some of it is encouraging investment into these higher risk/reward endeavours - hopefully out of the non-productive investments in housing.

When hardware is involved in particular this is an expensive exercise. But, it is literally how you learn what will work, be it in pharmaceuticals, building design, cars, software, etc.

SpaceX got further than NASA did in the same time and budget period because they weren't afraid of blowing up most of their rockets. Now they are the cheapest most efficient way to put things in space.

is equally capable of doing these things, but we need to understand and fix the funding issues.

The failure of Redflow, an Australian battery maker, highlights a few things: has innovative technically capable people, hardware/manufacturing is particularly hard, and, Australians don't understand innovation.

, in the sense I'm using it here, is basically the applied to solving real world problems. That basically means taking our current understanding of what should work, trying it (experiment), and then learning from the probable failures. Repeat.

So here's the deal. In an effort to stop downplaying the amazing progress of humanity, and making fantasy more appealing, when a kid asks you how some real and awesome works, and you don't have an answer, then "science" should be the short hand, not "magic". "Magic" is for when it's made up.

Magnets are . Wireless everything is science. Not dying in childhood is science.

It's nice to stop and acknowledge some of this stuff. It's very easy to take for granted.

Politics should be about individuals being represented, not about lobby groups being represented, because lobby power is much much greater than people power. Besides, those lobby groups are made up of people. They can donate directly if they care to.
