# What is [DARK]
The [DARK] role-playing game is a set of rules with the goal of telling stories that feature horror, mystery, and deadly, frantic combat. These rules are setting agnostic and meant to be extended to fit whatever world you wish to tell these sorts of stories in.
[DARK] assumes lower powered characters than many other role-playing games might. The players control exceptional individuals, but they cannot survive being stabbed or shot that much more than your average human might.
[DARK] is about investigation into the hidden worlds that endanger us: secret cults, clandestine government experiments, and world ending prophesies. Can there be dungeons? Can there be dragons? Yes, to both, but [DARK] aspires to making getting to them at least as important to the experience as conquering them.

Made progress on the Demagouge. Working on some chaosy flames for the open hand, but that green stuff hasn't set yet.
Here's also the Witch and 2 Disciples I'm starting with. Not a whole lot custom here. Just a head swap on the grenadier.

Convoluted / hard to parse boolean logic is a huge pet peeve of mine. I have encountered some absolutely heinous work a contractor recently put in a react component and Holy shit. If we weren't working remote I'd have to resist the urge to mush their head.
got shit in here like, (!(!A && B) && !(A && !B)), except those inner clauses are hidden in poorly named variables.
Oh and let's not forget the instances that end in a ternary whose outputs *then also have more conditions*

The first Half-Life was my first real experience with a PC / Mouse + Keyboard FPS. My older sister, again, brought it back from college. I distinctly remember her roommate refusing to watch her play it because it was "scary".
I never beat the campaign without cheating and it sat in the stack of games, unnoticed, through a big move across the state. When a family of friends came and visited, the 'kids' were upstairs and the one closest to me in age noticed it and was like "we have to play this"
I was absolutely terrible, but our 1v1s were super enjoyable. I kept playing it well after they left. I got team fortress. I got the tron ricochet game. I got bot software and downloaded more mods. Weird ones like a Vampire vs Vampire Hunter one, and a "team fortress but everyone is a wizard". I made my friends play it with me and I will forever cherish those memories.

When I was kid I wanted an Xbox for 2 reasons, these 2 games. I had played both at a friend's house and when I got my own these were the first games I got.
I never really liked shooters before. But something about the advancements with this console generation made them actually feel fun to play.
I always preferred the co-op, something Battlefront had over halo, but I played them both for hours at a time, working through achievements and harder campaigns

I played this one more or less simultaneously with Battle Realms, and it was the first _mature_ game I ever played. I remember having to change the shortcut icon and name to hide it from my babysitter, who was a super hardcore church of christ lady.
I have fond memories of playing the necromancer completely blind. No build was planned and when my first ever unique dropped, the maul, I pumped my strength until I could wield it, optimization be damned.
I first played my sister's copy, which she took with her to college. So when I bought the battle chest and it came with a strategy guide I immediately became obsessed with theory crafting. A curse I carry with me to this day.

Not the first rts I ever played (that'd be the starcraft demo), but one of the most impactful. I would play this for hours every weekend with my friends. I learned about no-cd cracks so I could put it on a thumb drive and take it to my friends' houses.
I remember being fascinated by its novel, to me at least, training based unit system. I found the replenishing nature of the resources far more enjoyable and relaxing than the consumptive nature of them in something like starcraft. Running out of something was, and continues to be, a huge source of anxiety. We'd put together these cramped bases with both our clans' buildings in one area and turtle until we had our meme-build armies together. I was a big fan of "just everyone is a musketeer"

Age of Wonders was and is an absolute obsession of mine.
I got the demo of the original and repeatedly played through the demo scenario. It was my first experience with the 4X / Turn based strategy genres, and I was hooked.
Purchasing the full game was the first time I ever used my own money to buy a game. I played through both campaigns, and would chain scenarios back to back. I will forever miss the lizard folk + flood spell
AoW introduced me to custom maps and modding. I would use the construction kit it shipped with to make custom maps where I got access to all the secret spells, or to set up absolutely brutal world wide flooding. I once tried to recreate the Hobbit, which I just finished reading.
I remember my wonder when I discovered that a sequel had been released, and I immediately bought it online using some baby sitting money. I backed AoW III in college and actually pre-ordered the fourth entry and do not regret it. It's a great series.

This was my first final fantasy, and probably my second rpg, after Pokémon. My oldest sibling got it as one of the first games for our Playstation. I remember watching her playing through Midgar before starting my own save.
We had PRINTED OUT an entire walk through because someone my sister met icq told her about the secret characters and we could not figure out how to get Vincent. I set up my dialog boxes with a really garish rainbow effect and I think I maxed out the in game timer. Got multiple golden chocobos
I was probably a little young too really process the messages it was trying to get across on my first play through, but it instilled a love of the genre that is largely responsible for my purchase of Septerra Core. I bring this up solely because I couldn't fit it in the list and I think it's a fascinating game lol.

I have vivid memories playing this with my siblings, crowded around the family computer. This, and its predecessor, got me into adventure games.
So much of it has seared itself on my brain cells, the mint icon, the evil genie, the dog palace guards, the hole in the wall, the labyrinth, all just wedged in there.
I low key miss the physical copy protection and this was one of my first ever purchases on GoG

I was obsessed with Pokémon when I was a kid. I got really into the cards because they were big on the playground (until they got banned). I used to wake up early to watch the anime, first episode I remember was the haunted house tower when Ash straight up dies.
Then one year I got yellow and the Pikachu Gameboy for Christmas. It was probably one of the first video games I ever had that specifically "for me" and not generally "for the kids". I played the shit out of that game. I learned the duping trick, got a mew, got my main roster all to 99, it was great.
I got Silver almost the day it came out. I'd saved some birthday money and asked my mom to get it. Traded all my little guys over and everything.
Gen 2 was the peak and that's not just the nostalgia or the fact that it was the last one I played till college talking
Partners started talking about the #25GamesToKnowMe thing that's apparently going around. Figured I'd share mine here in addition.

I fell down the rabbit hole of wtf has been going on in the past, like, 8 hours?
This sucks. I guess its the first time I've been "involved" in this sort of infighting and I'm surprised how heated I've gotten.
Like, block lists are a bad idea. They introduce single points of failure, especially if they're "maintained" by a small group of people with basically no oversight. Or are *shudders* automated.
This feels so much like a "1-strike and you're out" deal. No leniency. No double checking.
As far as I can tell, it was like, one(1) person who said something shitty and the mods didn't act the way this list wanted them to? So obviously EVERYONE on that server is complicit. How dare they! Time to Ban-Them-All.
I just scrolled through the last 8h of local posts and saw nothing to warrant labeling this whole instance as racist.

My wife ran a moden NEMESIS game while we were on the tail end of college. I was playing a dweeby college professor who got roped into a Mythos investigation while helping a colleague.
It was low power, we were just normal ass humans, not even combat trained. I especially was wholly unsuited for any sort of fight. So the final set piece, in the killers fucked up Mythos dungeon was frightening and tense.
I cannot recommend playing a flawed (discrete from bad) character in a horror campaign enough. If your character is never scared, never in over their head, are you even engaging in with the medium?
It's why I think the advice of "Don't play a paladin in Carrion Crown" is good actually. Can you imagine going through a haunted house when you mechanically cannot be feared? It's boring.

Day 27: Game I'd like a new edition of
This is hard. A lot of the games I play regularly *have* new editions that I explicitly don't play.
After some ruminating, I think I'll go with #Symbaroum again. I talked about a lot of its strengths and weaknesses a few days ago and I think it could really benefit from from 2nd Edition, or even just a 1.5.
Fix the rules presentation. Fix the inconsistencies. Address some of the balance issues. Etc.
It recently got a 5e port however, so ill tidings there 😕
