Three members of my DEI team took umbrage at this article's tone because how dare they talk about us like this and that it made us sound like were giving up.

I said the article was fairly mild salsa and that I honestly felt somewhat betrayed by the organization for the speed of its premature capitulation after claiming it would protect us.

DEI team meetings have been really awkward.

The other big highlight was when she asked "what would you have had the director say instead?"

I said I'd rather have heard that he was directing our legal team to find or file a lawsuit against the directives because they forced us to violate basic science, state law, and common decency. I hoped he would signal that we would fight until we were forced to do otherwise because we believed in the principles of trans and immigrant rights and that we stood by our queer employees and patients. Instead we announced we'd be pre-emptively adopting federal guidelines telling us to erase trans people from scientific research in hopes of continuing to save straight and white lives, and that I hoped she could respect I was disgusted by his choices but that I could continue to work for him as long as he didn't ask me to approve of his decision to his face.

Her response was "I... didn't expect you to have an answer, especially not that one."

Gonna be a long year.

My half-hour one-one-one with my boss took seventy minutes today.

It started with her giving me until July to "get my shit together and get into the technical details of my team's workload because I can't lead if I don't understand what I'm working on."

It ended with her finally accepting that if two engineers, the PM, and I all come to the same wrong understanding independently talking with the data coordinator -- who's had nine years to learn the task and hasn't taught anyone to do it before -- maybe the problem isn't with my lack of understanding or with my lack of effort to learn. It had to pass through the words "neurodivergent" and "ableist" to get there.

And on the way we had to talk about "my behavior," which prompted her to invite me to explain myself, to confirm she really wanted me to explain myself, and then to sit blown and feeling guilty after I explained. She even said, "I'm sorry, I can't do what you're doing, I'm not brave enough to face that."

My boss, a cis-hetero allistic Indian-Irish natural-born American citizen: Orrery, after Friday's meeting I feel I need to remind you that as a person in a position of authority at this company, your opinions hold a great deal of sway, and that when you speak your voice carries weight. We expect you to uphold the social norms of a workplace environment and not use politicized language at work.
Me: When I say "A trans man with whom I work through the ERG that's currently under threat because it supports the existence of queer people is regularly breaking down at work because he's being asked to erase his existence from the studies he's working on and that's adding to my stress" that is a fact, not a political statement. The people calling that political speech are the ones politicizing it. The social norms I'm being asked to uphold don't expect me to exist within them. I can't do both and still be myself.
Boss: ... now I feel bad for having asked.
Me: Sympathies.
