A Little History
I am a fan of historical fiction (from the period, I mean. Not period-style work, though I love it too) I'm particularly fond of Sherlock Holmes, Arsene Lupin, and the like. I listen to them every time the weather turns chill and drear.
That means I know a lot about what people were experiencing in that time period and what they feared, because that's what people write about.
What particularly hits me at the moment is how many of these stories hinge on
*Baby Farming (a practice where parents who couldn't afford to take care of their babies paid somebody else a 'subscription' to have their baby taken in)
*Women Dying When They Go To See An 'Extraction Specialist'
*Dying Children
*Child Abandoned At A Work House
*Children Sold Into Terrible Work Environments By Overburdened Orphanages
*Women Dying of 'Despair'
*Children Living In The Streets On Scraps
*Desperate People In The Workhouse Dying And Being Sent To A Paying Doctor Who Wants To Dissect The Body
*People Dying Of Random Food Poisoning As A Routine Part Of Life
*People Who Survived A Childhood In Poverty Trying To Hide It
