As expected, he crashes the markets today so his buddies, who already shorted, can "buy the dip" and make double when things rebound on cancellation (or softening) of the tariffs before Wednesday. He's done it 3 times now.

No text, just a "video message from our Dean".

Welp, guess who will have no knowledge of said guidelines come summer.

I enjoy when tools (miro, google docs, etc) have the little control at the top to switch between and Edit and View modes, so that I don't accidentally modify something while I'm reviewing it, and I get back my keyboard and mouse for more navigational options.

These tools have finally caught up to vim.

My company Slack is now piloting one of these internal ChatGPT bots. Great.

I've now seen it in action 3 times, all of which go like this:

  1. Person A asks, who handles X?
  2. Person B asks the bot
  3. The bot spams a huge message
  4. Person B says, I think it's team Y
  5. Person C confirms it's team Y
  6. Person D jumps in to clarify that a few of the points made by the bot are, in fact, not true

The future!

So here's a weird service I'd use if it existed...

You browse lumber online, you buy (and pay for) larger sizes but specify smaller cuts to have shipped to you. The excess stays in a sort of "inventory" that you can come back to and use again, paying only the cut/ship fee that time.

I tend to have smaller projects, and don't have a vehicle suitable for driving large sheets of plywood home to cut and use, nor do I want to store the excess. So I'd gladly pay a cut/ship fee to avoid figuring that out.

I know you can often by small pieces directly, but they're more expensive, and I know you can cut at the store yourself, but my local store is terrible and I can literally never find an employee to let me.

The service could even estimate in their favor as far as what can be cut from what, I don't care. And they obviously don't have to store and use "my" actual material; it's all on paper only.

This could really just be software to manage payment and inventory and then contract the cut/ship out to someone local. 🤔

I'm loving this new use of "allergic" in code review when making a suggestion based more in personal experience than any objective coding practice.

Example: I'm a bit allergic to type synonyms, can we make this a newtype?

It's a valid justification, while also admitting you're being picky. And it's less violent than "battle scars".

Here's the thing about code style: nothing is better or worse, except that consistent is better and inconsistent is worse.

Some style actually "matters", such as using a semi-colon all the time, even if there exists rules about when it can be optional, so you can avoid bugs caused by getting those rules wrong.

Some style brings objective benefit, such as preferring a multi-line format that reduces diff noise when lines are added or removed.

But these facts only serve as a basis of discussion within a team to adopt one style over another.

Once adopted, none of that matters anymore. The only reason we do what we do is because it is what has been adopted, and is now what we all should targeted in order to be consistent.

Therefore, when I notice in code review that you've done one style over here and a different style over there, I'm going to nit-pick that, even if there's no adopted rule or objective basis for one over the other.

I'm not actually nit-picking the style, which indeed doesn't matter, I'm nit-picking the lack of intention, thought, and consistency, which does.

So let me make sure I have this right:

OpenTelemetry is a spec/standard, with a bunch of libraries/SDKs that are agnostic to where said telemetry goes.

You instrument your app with these libraries and you send the telemetry to a collector where you can centrally transform and then export things anywhere: Honeycomb, Datadog, XRay whatever.

But, in your nice agnostic instrumentation, you have to make sure you generate trace ids in whatever bespoke format the actual place you are exporting to needs. And that happens in the app code; you can't do it in, you know, the place where you centrally transform and export things.

So no, you can't actually export to multiple places, or have your instrumentation be de-coupled from the storage.
