As this is a new platform, I've been rather indiscriminately following people, but as I recently reemphasized this on my bird account, it seems like a good time to bring it up here.

As a rule, I unfollow any accounts that are polarizing or negative regardless of whether I agree with them or not.

Such users are making the social media experience worse for everybody and should be paid as little attention as possible. They are a big reason we're here instead of that bird site.

It also nicely complemented Tuchman's "Guns of August," particularly in providing more details about that dramatic chase on the Mediterranean that ended up with German Admiral Souchon heading to Constantinople and forcing the Ottoman Empire to enter the war.

Just finished reading "A Peace to End All Peace" by Fromkin, and there's so much to unpack. It explains how the Allies at the end of WWI set the stage for the conflicts we see today:

- Britain suffered huge losses in opening an Eastern front in WWI due to Russia's request (a need that evaporated when the Turkish invasion of Russia proved incompetent).
- These losses provided political motivation to make them "mean something" in winning territory from the Ottoman Empire

The reason Twitter and so much social media is bad is because they reward behavior likely to increase engagement, and toxicity is one of those things.

One of the reasons we're here is because of that. Keep your content positive and constructive, advocating for what you support instead of against what you hate (don't replicate Twitter's toxicity here).

And perhaps most importantly, *unfollow* accounts that do otherwise, even if you broadly agree with them. I do that as a rule.

Keep in mind that it's impossible for a voting system to be perfect, and there is no end to how much you can argue about various...

Don't go down that rabbit hole! That unintentionally sends the message to everyone watching that both methods are worse than plurality.

Don't compete. Cooperate! This is not a zero-sum game. We *all* win with every election that switches away from plurality voting.
