Linking your social group to policy requires some knowledge/interest in politics.
So it’s the *most*, not least, aware who are most likely to hold identity-consistent views.

- Least aware: policy views don’t vary much by identity
- Most aware: big policy differences between groups
Paper uses ANES and CCES data, multiple groups, multiple DVs, but some highlights: as awareness increases, so does
- how liberal LGBTQ/Jewish/secular/Black voters are
- how conservative evangelicals are
But not everyone is paying attention to politics, or knows “what goes with what”.
Connecting identity to policy views requires political awareness, which varies *a lot*.
As a result: awareness moderates the identity-to-politics link.
- More aware voters hold more group-consistent views
- Gaps between groups widen with awareness
To start: different social groups often have different political beliefs.
- Black Americans more Democratic than White Americans;
- Evangelicals more conservative than Jewish voters;
- LGBTQ people more liberal than straight people;
etc etc
