Achievement unlocked: after less than a year of looking after a Web Application Firewall (WAF) I've had an app dev blame it as the root cause of the slowness in dealing with particular requests.
My colleague is rewording my reply into something still fact-based but much more diplomatic.
I mean, how dare I suggest they profile their app that they wrote and deployed...
Due to a recent birthday, I thought I should buy myself a car better fitting my age. So I bought myself a Yaris.

How? First thing in the morning, pre-coffee (get them excuses out first!), checked my mail and saw an internal broadcast.
DID check the sender
DIDN'T think about how suitable the subject was for the audience
DIDN'T remember that broadcasts are filtered into a folder
DIDN'T check the link location before clicking
So, yeah. Don't be me...

I'm trying to find a switch for my home lab, my wants are:
- not junk
- around 16 ports
- mostly 2.5GbE, the cherry-on-the-top-but-not-strictly-required would be a couple of (copper) 10GbE
- to avoid switch-sprawl, a couple of PoE ports would be nice but is not a hard requirement.
- compact, *definitely* not 19" rackmount. No more than 33cm/~13" across, it has to fit in an IKEA Kallax "cube". My ideal would be something like a double height 8-port switch
- cheap, the more I spend on the switch the less I have to spend on compute.
- hard requirement for entirely local management (if managed)
- Available to buy from Oz
- an unpronounceable/unheard-of name doesn't worry me.
TIA for your suggestions!

It boggled my mind (and still does) that an orchestra and a few singers where able to faithfully reproduce dance tracks from the last 20-something years.
I'd upload a short video for flavour but my phone used 670MB for a one minute video and I'm not going to abuse Jerry's media hosting so here's a YT link of an official video from last years event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsVaw4BAprU

I acknowledge that I am frequently much more snarky and sarcastic when tired but last night I slept well.
My post looked like this:
Amusingly the prompt given to me prior to writing this was: "Start a post, try writing with AI" and that's exactly what this post is about.
First the link to the original article
https://www.theregister.com/2024/11/28/linkedin_ai_posts/
And a small excerpt from the article to give you a flavour of the articles tone:
"If you've spent much time on LinkedIn, you've probably run into self-congratulatory posts, tips on how to maximize your "grindset," and other business lessons from alleged thought leaders. It's tiring, but a study of such posts has pulled the curtain off the wizard: More than half of such posts are written by AI."
Oh dear...
I highly recommend reading the full article.

- the NAS
- a USB dock bought for debugging why the disks weren't working
- another PC
So I returned them and bought a second batch today:
1 was detected by the OS then it wasn't as soon as I tried to put a file system on it
1 managed to get a file system on it and then wasn't detected ever again
2 seemed to be DOA straight out of the packaging.
that's hours of my life I'll never get back!
The weird thing is that a random SSD works just fine in all of the drive bays. I have never been this unlucky with HDDs.
I'm supposed to be studying for a Palo Alto Networks cert and a shiny arrived - the SteamDeck was just released officially in upside-down land last week.
Grown up me would put this to one side for later, but actual me is setting it up as I type.

Very disappointed that they only tried to make me download an "MFA app" called Anydesk Remote Access. I mean, the clue is in the name, am I right?
Extremely disappointed to not get any leads on fancy malware.
Should I start answering the phone with "Cyber Fraud Department..."?
Somewhat amusingly I got a second call from "ACSC" from a different number and I said as much to the caller and he hung up :D

I dealt with an annoying project manager today. They have an unfortunate personality trait that ignores what I say when it's not what they want to hear.
Today they copied in the world and their dog in their whining email to me, so I replied (to all!) and "reminded" the project manager of all the things I've said previously which explains *why* it's taking so long.
Try weaselling your way out of that one you slippery bastard!

Said email didn't link to the the location of the documents and because they are stored in Sharepoint I was never going to be able to find them (I did try!).

Hooo Boy. I was warned it would take a while, and they weren't wrong! Because I suck at games and I had a nearly factory fresh Railjack and a so-new-it-still-has-that-new-car-smell Necramech it took me five hours.

It was decided to map out where sign-ins to $Cloud_service were happening. It turns out that the accuracy was far beyond what we thought was possible - to the point that employees of $Client would be at risk if that data did a "Snowflake" (no, $Client doesn't use Snowflake or similar services) and fell into the wrong hands.
Oh boy. Op-sec is definitely a thing, and while the employees are certainly trained, my colleagues that do on-site support for them are likely not.
