I recently discovered the joy of putting tmux in my ~/.zshrc. This might be a controversial choice, but it enables such things as:
* On each login, start a new tmux session or attach to the existing one.
* When in a console login, detaching from tmux logs out.
* When SSHed in, detaching from tmux closes the connection.

Voila -- persistent shell across all logins!

* Note: I have not tried this with terminal emulators in the mix.
