Just rage-clicked and then rage-quit a video about how *now is the time to stop consuming and start creating*. I was going to leave a tetchy comment but then thought better of it. I think I really disliked the idea that experiencing things that others have made is "consuming".

It's that false dichotomy that making art is active but reading/watching/playing/listening-to art is passive and that you can't do both. Reading a good poem can be a really energised and active thing for me –⁠ how multiple readings yield different results and inspire my own writing.

I also think that such a dichotomy looks down on the audience too. The guy in the video obviously sees his audience as passive consumers rather than people whose attention might be just as exacting, intelligent and intense as the act of creation.

I'm re-reading the old BBFC report on Alien from 1979 and one of the interesting things to emerge from it is how people who had only seen the creature in the first film (and only watched it once) felt that it was constantly growing and changing form throughout the film. There were only two designs used (the chestburster and the fully grown) but the way the creature was shot, edited and performed conjured so much more in the minds of the viewers at the time.
