#wordweavers 19. Do your MCs or antagonists have characteristics you’re uncomfortable writing?
Lorelei has an extremely troubled past. She doesn't talk about it much and when she does, it's always in dialogue. No inner monologue, no flashbacks, very little detail.
Not only am I not comfortable writing about it, but the details aren't that important anyway. It's supposed to be a sexy, dramatic tale of self-discovery and love, not a story about suffering and the pain of human existence.

My story isn't nearly developed enough to require a guide, but I wouldn't be opposed to it some day when it's all grown up!

Lorelei is conventionally beautiful, sporty, and charistmatic, but she's so wary of others and scared of herself that she doesn't even try to make connections.
Amelia is empathetic and kind, but she's also awkward and shy. She naturally connects with people when given the opportunity, but she has a hard time meeting them in the first place.

It isn't. The problem is a lack of corporate regulation and legal protections for creators.
These issues have existed for a long time and have only gotten worse decade after decade.
AI has simply brought these problems to the forefront by enabling companies to pillage information at an unprecedented rate, repackage it, and sell it back to us.

An AI/LLM is a tool. Like any tool, it can be used for good and for ill.
As a helpful tool, it enables people to express themselves in ways they couldn't without it and makes reading and research much more accessible.

Lorelei must have neighbors because she lives in a high-rise condo, but I hadn't given it much thought.
I'll need to introduce them at some point, that seems like a fun source of conflict.

Lorelei: "My ass and hips, mostly. Upstairs is good, but damn I wish I could fill out my bottoms the way Amelia does. Think of all the new outfits I could pull off!"
"Oh, and the loneliness. And the mood swings. And... let's not talk about this, actually."
"Ass and hips, that's my final answer."

What are your MC’s living conditions like?
Swanky? Lorelei liquidated her inheritance and has been a successful adult actress for years.
Between that and her general frugality, she owns a high-rise condo... with minimalist decor, sparse furniture, and no vehicle.
Aside from her condo, the only thing she spends much money on is clothes. Lots of clothes. All the clothes.

Lorelei's mom died of an illness when she was 10, driving her father to alcoholism. He drinks himself to death when she's 18.

In my 20k word chapter, I have plenty of room to break up dialogue and play with the pacing, make it sound and feel good.
In my 2k word short story, my dialogue is taking up almost all of the available space, but a lot of back-and-forth between two characters with nothing to break it up just doesn't read well.
Gotta do more showing and less telling, I suppose.

No. I watch way more animated media than live-action stuff, so I visualize my stories as anime, regardless of the genre.
I definitely know what my characters look like, though. I've found AI to be incredibly useful for diversifying my cast and nailing down their physical details.
I plan to get them professionally drawn some day, though. They deserve the upgrade!

Lorelei is hiding from the world. Her implacable confidence, her aggressive approach, and her tempestuous mood swings are all a mask to shield her from suffering the mistakes of her past again.
Getting to know someone so detached and flippant can be a quite the chore, but romancing her wouldn't make much of a story if it was easy!

I spent my whole schooling writing non-fiction, mostly rants and critiques and autobiographical stuff, because of the classes I had to take to finish my degree.
I'm not sad about it because I ended up meeting the best professor ever (Lisa Nikolidakis, go read her stuff, she's awesome), but it feels so good to let loose!
Nothing like going from sex and sensuality to tears and trauma-dumping in one paragraph, y'know?

Great question, posture says a lot about a character's behavior.
Lorelei stands straight and tall, her footing firm. She's always on guard, ready for trouble to appear any moment.
Amelia fidgets uncomfortably, changing positions and shifting her weight regularly. She has a lot of anxious energy.

Compelling characters placed in interesting situations making choices that reflect their personal goals and values.
Variety in language and pacing. Most people don't want to read a story that is repetitive and meandering.
Setting expectations. If your readers trust you to deliver what they want, they'll be hooked on *when* it's coming.

Older novels ... should they be edited for the modern world?
No.
There is a lot of terrible stuff in human history, but we need to see it. Sanitizing the past to cater to a modern audience is unwittingly rehabilitating the people who participated in those terrible things.
Let them speak for themselves. Let the reader draw their own conclusions. We can't see how far we've come if we don't look at the road behind us.

Yes! Characters having different backgrounds just adds so much texture.
Lorelei grew up in a poor, crime-ridden neighborhood. Amelia's family is middle-class. Knowing nothing else about them, you can assume stark differences in how they live and what they value.
It's such a strong base to build character details on!
