I'm delighted that this article has made its way to press now. An autoethnography of my experience of reading the history of my family, in terms of the contaminated blood scandal. The immensity of the task I took on when I started this PhD was not clear to me - nearly there but totally worth it to tell the stories.

Reading some of the stark words and experiences of people like me was painful.

I'm fascinated. The #InfectedBloodInquiry (where thousands died and more were infected with life threatening diseases) got a day or so of press and the Post office one is still going. I have a theory that this is because of the numbers - we can visualise 40-50 people being harmed but the idea of thousands becomes unattainable. Additionally, the idea of children being killed by AIDs etc. is too confronting and painful to engage with.

Even so, bit weird.

At the final report of the #InfectedBloodInquiry and I have to say sir Brian is the very representative of ethics, integrity and clarity. If you want to understand ethics on a medical or governmental level, you should watch his final speech. It was delayed by 10 minutes of standing ovations. His conclusions are the most comprehensive, evidence based paper I have ever read.

So much emotion here today. #haemophilia . There is an odd feeling of validation, recognition and fury for all here.

The impact of this is not only on those infected but on those whose families were killed or infected - Haemophilia in particular has a ripple effect for those families, where the daughters of Haemophiliacs have children with the condition and often have to take them to the same centres where their family were infected. In my research, I have already seen the pain and fear that can cause.

26,800 people became infected with Hepatitis C and 1,243 with HIV through blood transfusions and other blood products, including Factor VIII. In addition, by 2024 when the Inquiry’s statistics were finalised, around 5,000 people with haemophilia and other blood conditions had been infected with Hepatitis C or HIV. Of those infected with HIV, fewer than 250 remain alive – 380 of those infected were children, of whom more than half have died.
