A genuine problem that keeps coming up with imho is transparency. I honestly think the aggregated, anonymous advertising information might be a good idea. But -

The problem is 3-fold:

1. This was rather sudden, or at least felt sudden to the community. I feel that Mozilla has poor community outreach and thusly does a diservice to its fans.

2. The enabling of this feature is opaque. I understand the arguments that opt-in means that the vast majority of not-in-the-know users will not enable it.

But why not a forced choice screen on startup with the aggregated collection being selected by default? (and a short explainer paragraph) It's disingenous to me to act like the only alternative from opt-in is opt-out.

3. I should be able to see these impressions.

I want to be able to view these impressions, where they came from, and have the capacity to strike them from the record. I want to be able to ban particular advertisers or sites from getting impressions from me.

If I can already turn it off, why can't I have more granular control?

...

As can be seen, the issue with this feature to me is the vast lack of transparency in numerous forms. I understand the drive to go for advertising's tracking bs at its *source* to prevent the economic incentive that creates it, but I don't understand how you fuck up transparency this badly.

Optimally I think there should be some token system (Privacy Pass maybe?) set up so instances and users can be independently and automatically verified between instances.

As it stands Mastodon will be ineviably swarmed. We need structural protections!

To be quite honest, I'm not sure why proof of humanity was not a default and something implemented from the beginning.

I'm not surprised at all by the spam and I've been continually surprised by the lack of instance/user-verification set up.

Maybe this is why wants to join the Fediverse. They want to be Gmail - the provider that survives with all other alternatives being choked with spam.
