It’s Vermont’s turn to promote W1AW Volunteers On The Air starting at 8 PM Eastern time (0000 UTC). It lasts for a week. During weeknights, I’ll be on 40-meter FT8. On the weekend, I’ll be on both 15-meter FT8 and later on 40-meter FT8.

Hope to work you as W1AW/1.

The good news on working a Pirate for Bouvet - I thought I needed 3Y0J for a brand new one. But I didn’t. When I reconciled my downloaded LoTW logs with my logging program, my logging program took the 1990 DXpedition to Bouvet and classified the country as…Antarctica.

I had already confirmed Bouvet on both SSB and CW. I spent 25-30 hours trying to work the current DXpedition…and never heard them once. Whew….

As for DXing, my latest ‘success’ story was working a 3Y0J Pirate, along with about 900 of my fellow hams. I’ve heard a LOT of deliberate QRM in my life, but this DXpedition took the cake. Understandable, most wanted, poor signal, tough propagation.

But they gave it a lot of effort and I am amazed (and shamed) by the tremendous number of hams who simply chose to interfere with their operation. And I’ll leave it at that.

From a contesting perspective, I’ve contested both as a single operator as well as with MM WA0AIH, to M2 with KS9K and subsequently K4JA once he moved to Virginia. As a single-op, I’ve placed 10th in the US in the ARRL RTTY Roundup and first place in NA (from K4JA) in the CQWW RTTY contest.

I’ve also contested in M2 from Costa Rica and from Bermuda as VP9/K9JY.

You learn a lot of skills really fast if you contest; it’s one of the best aspects of the hobby. And how your station performs.

On the DXing side, I’ve confirmed over 300 entities over my (long) ham career. I had stopped practicing the hobby for about 15-years around before getting back into the hobby in September 2021. I threw away everything - log books, QSL cards, sold all my equipment.

Getting back in the hobby in 2021, I had one salvation from completely starting over - all my logs were on Logbook of the World. I was able to download all of my logs. I just finished reconciling all of the countries with the logs.

Now that I’ve lurked here for a while and liked and boosted other posts, I think I should start posting stuff. Let’s start with I’m mostly a DXer and Contester. I currently have a modest station - Icom 7300 and a single vertical antenna - as I just moved to Vermont from Wisconsin in June of 2022. We mostly worked on house stuff and I was only able to get the full-sized 40-meter vertical up before winter. It also worked on 15, 24, and 10 meters with a bit of tuning. More coming this summer.

When the Bouvet DXpedition had their clocks of some 14-seconds on FT8 and transmitting ODD, it was noted that WSJT-x only allows Fox and Hounds to transmit as a Hound on ODD time spaces - but FTDX in Hound mode allows both, no matter which side of the time the Fox is on.

So I downloaded FTDX and did a crash course learning the differences in that software compared to WSJT-x. And it turns out I like it more than WSJT-x.

Do you use both programs or only one?

Question for the day and looking for your opinion: Multi-band ground mounted vertical with 60-radials (for example, a DX Engineering MBVE-5AE Series) or a multi-band vertical with no radials (for example, a GAP Titan center fed vertical)?

I have a 40 and 80-meter full size verticals with 60-radials each and they are gangbusters. I’m wondering how the above would compare as my bias is ground mounted vertical with 60-radials (the radials make such a difference).

Thanks!
