Just looking at the up time on a Mastodon server instance I manage, 'up 676 days, 21:38'. I estimate that my total maintenance effort for this over this period, including initial set up to no more than 30 hrs, which by my calculation is approx 0.18% of the up time.

Impressive, talk about something that just works!

Iv'e been running Linux Mint on my old dev laptop for 6 months now but afraid its time for a change.

My main dev box runs an F38 KDE Wayland Plasma session and I just miss it.

With no roadmap for Mint to transition to Wayland and a few other minor niggles like swapping between dnf and apt for instance I've installed F38 on it.

Mint is a great distro though, especially for users coming from Windows, easy to use and maintain with great support for 3rd party drivers etc.

I've been running my Mastodon server since February and what a pain free experience this has been.Its a small machine(e2-medium) in GCE...

I've been running my Mastodon server since February and what a pain free experience this has been.

Its a small machine(e2-medium) in GCE with an automated backup schedule and only a 50GB disk, running Ubuntu 20.04.

It 'just works'. I login monthly and run a clean up script, that's really it.

If anyone is considering running their own Mastodon server I'd highly recommend it, especially if you are new to server admin.

Cost is about £30 a month.
