Worked on by the JPEG team and some google engineers to get it into the modern web, it has a lot of neat features;
- Lossless transcoding from a normal JPEG
- Supports lossy and lossless encodings
- Good for both photographs and digital graphics
- Alpha channels transparency
- Layers built in
- Typically 20:1 - 50:1 compression
