In 2023, Atlanta reduced its DOT budget to a paltry $50.7 million -- three times smaller than the transportation budgets of similarly sized cities.

The budget announced last week adds only a weak 2% increase. Let's boost that budget & keep up with peers!

The St Pat's parade on Peachtree today was a great chance to see a city street achieve the best version of itself: embracing a huge crowd of pedestrians + culture + storefronts, near rail stations. We need Peachtree to be more like this regularly, not just during parades. 💚

The overhaul of the City of Atlanta zoning code is on hold while the city works on the Comprehensive Development Plan update (state law requires us to update its every five years).

Community engagement sessions for the plan kick off next Tuesday (March 19, 4pm - 7:30pm) at the Dunbar Neighborhood Center and will continue through April. For a full list of upcoming meetings, visit atlantaforall.com

But first take a look at this good writeup from Atlanta Civic Circle about the CDP!

In case you needed a reminder: a mix of walking + biking + public transit will provide a better future for cities like Atlanta in terms of sustainability on all fronts.

Let's design our cities (and burbs) with the intention of dramatically reducing all car trips -- yes, even EV ones. Look at all new developments and ask: "is this moving us toward a less car-oriented future or is it more of the same?"

Good news today: Atlanta City Council has banned right-on-red in the center of the city!! This is a win for safer streets for all, especially for pedestrians.

Big thanks to Council's Jason Dozier for his work on this!

Thanks to all who joined the @threadatl Drift the Map event at the site of The Stitch today, and big thanks to Jennifer Ball for sharing some inside info about the project with everyone. We had 70 attendees -- the biggest group yet. And thankfully the rain held off.

Beltline planners are looking to put trees & shrubs between the trail & the light rail tracks.

They're also "exploring how the trains could run on a grass track without any overhead wires." Design for the first rail segment should be completed in 2025.

ThreadATL’s Drift The Map: The Stitch

Imagine if the Downtown Connector was buried in a three-quarter mile long tunnel and Atlanta’s next park built on top. Can this ambitious plan be guided to create affordable housing downtown & turn empty parking lots into residential density?

Join ThreadATL’s @driftthemap and special guests Atlanta Councilman Amir Farokhi and Central Atlanta Progress's Jennifer Ball February 11, 2024 at 2 p.m for a 2 mile walk around The Stitch.

This $700 million plan would bury 3/4 mile of the Downtown Connector and create 14 acres of new urban space between Midtown and Downtown Atlanta which was severed by the building of the highway in the 1950s.

Gathering point will be street level outside Civic Center MARTA station.

It's an impressive change: many pedestrians were walking from the Beltline into Midtown Promenade shopping center on a recent weekend day.

On the other side, you can see the suburban-style setup that lingers from its original design, with a sea of parking against the street.

What other shopping centers would you like to see retrofitted to better accommodate pedestrians?

*Caveat: the approach for pedestrians from Monroe Drive isn't great and needs some work.
