LOL, wow. My neighbor in his eighties asked me for help with his computer, and of course I was skeptical since I just do Linux server administration and don’t actually know much about Windows or MacOS these days. Turns out, someone talked him into running Linux Mint and it actually was stuff I understood.
So, uh, Year of Linux On The Desktop I guess?

4.2.2025 23:48What did we say about the rules?!Awwww. I just learned that Debian 13 “Trixie” has in fact finally dropped 32-bit support. That means my Asus EeePC 1000 is rapidly staring at paperweight status. Perhaps it’s time for a replacement, LOL. What’s on the market for tiny cheap laptops these days?

Kind of odd to do that so late at night at low enough altitudes to bother people, but I guess that’s what they do?

I don’t have a need for any giant yagi arrays or anything particularly heavy / high wind load. Rather, I’m just looking to get some omnidirectional VHF/UHF verticals up as high as possible for the largest line-of-sight coverage for the most affordable cost, and possibly clip some wire antennas on along the way. (I say VHF/UHF antennas, plural, because I’d at least also want a GMRS one up there along with 2m/70cm amateur, so will need multiple mounting points somehow.) The bulk of the supported weight would just be the coax rather than the actual antennas, which is enough to rule out the really simple fiberglass masts for wires. What are good options to look at and what general ballpark of total cost would they be?
Amazingly, my city ordinances appear to just completely exempt the Amateur Service rather than try to figure out the scope of their authority, and I’m more than five miles from any airport, so legally speaking it looks like I wouldn’t even need any permits below 200 feet… For more practical reasons though I figure I’m looking anywhere from 30 to 100. Below 30 it seems easier to just mount to the house or a tree, and over 100 feels absurd, LOL. I do technically have space where I *could* guy something in certain configurations, but I’d definitely prefer freestanding options. Telescoping or tilt-over for maintenance seems smart if possible - I’m not opposed to learning climbing, but it does seem like a lot of hassle. It’s worth noting that I do have neighboring houses, so while there doesn’t seem to be any legal regulation about failure radius, minimizing the possible damage in such an event would also be good to consider.
What good options exist for poking a fiberglass stick way up in the sky?
