I was called "weird" throughout my adolescence in the 60s. We all have a bit of the weird about us, especially in adolescent years, but two things set me apart as weird:
1. I supported equal rights for Black people.
2. I opposed the war against Vietnam.

Early in the morning of 4 December 1969, Chicago Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and his comrade Mark Clark were gunned down in their beds by a death squad of Chicago cops. Edward V Hanrahan, Democratic party State's Attorney, organized the death squad.

I had heard Fred speak several times at the U of Illinois campus where I studied.

This devastating crime has remained fresh in my memory for 54 years. Rest in power, Comrades.

His last words were, "This is a beautiful country."

He represented the national caucus of Labor Committee at the time. He dressed like he was auditioning as a fop in an 18th-century English comedy. The next year he went full fascist, beating CPUSA members and anyone else who would defend them.
