This video about the IBM 7030 Stretch was really informative to me.
I have to admit I knew nothing about this machine nor the time period and its computers.

The IBM Strech was really a precursor in many regards. It introduced a pipeline, a kind of "superscalar architecture" with several ALU/AGU and even helped to generalize the usage of 8-bit bytes inside IBM.

If not as powerful as first hoped, it still managed to hold the crown of the fastest computer in the world from 1961 to 1964.

It is really interesting and we can see that a lot of the foundations for the CGI that became more accessible in the following decades were already used in 1981 by researchers and some artists.

BTW don't pay attention to the presence of Nolan Bushnell on the thumbnail. He is of course interviewed for the video game side of things, but it is far from the main subject.

Yesterday I bought the “Rayz’ Arcade Chronology”, on Switch, as it was on sale. Here is the first game of the collection: RayForce, a 2D vertical Shoot’Em Up from 1994 by Taito.
I never played it before, but it’s really great. There are a ton of neat graphics tricks. Sprite rotations, zooms and even per column scrolling.
And the gameplay is superb, with its locking missiles system 🙂

I visited the “Game Story” exhibition in #versailles. It was a very good experience 🙂
A lot of consoles, home computers and arcade cabinets spanning from Computer Space to the PS4 are displayed and most of them are playable 😊

Their were a lot of kids during my visit and they really enjoyed playing on those “antique” machines 🙂

After nearly 35 years, it’s time to go back to the Valley of Eodon. 🦖

My father brought back an Origin System demo disk from the 1990 Las Vegas CES and I was mesmerized by the non-interactive demos announcing Savage Empire and Wing Commander. I spent a good amount of my money to buy them when the became available in France.

Unfortunately I was a bit young for the Worlds of Ultima. And the lack of a French translation did not help 😅

Today, I hope I’m ready for the challenge 🙂

I benchmarked Quake 3 on MacOS 9.

I will complete my article about the Mac Mini G4 with this data, and we can clearly see that, as expected, the Mini is far more powerful than a top notch PowerMac G4 from a few years earlier.

Interpreting the result of the Mini, I'd say that it is CPU limited around 80-FPS. When increasing the resolution, the LOD algorithm pushes slightly more geometry. This may explain the slight decrease of FPS.
In 1024x768x32 it is clearly GPU limited. I'd say it is because of the VRAM bandwidth.

Today it is « la Chandeleur ». Many French families will cook Crèpes to their kids’ delight

A short recipe:
+ 3 eggs
+ 50g of butter
+ 300g of flour
+ 450mL of milk
+ 3 spoons of sugar

Heat the butter to melt it.
Put the flour in a bowl.
Add the eggs the sugar and the melted butter.
Stir with an electric whisk while slowly adding the milk

Let the preparation at least 3h on the fridge.

Cook it in a very hot greased flat pan. You change the side of the crêpe half way when it does not stick to the pan anymore

Yesterday I played Loom and managed to go to the end.

It is a game that made a great impression on me when I played it as a kid. One of the first I could complete all by myself.

Now I understand why: it is quite easy and incredibly short 😅.
Nonetheless it is a wonderful experience. The story is interesting and served by the most beautiful EGA graphics ever. And the music is sumptuous. 35 years ago it was one of the very first game I played after buying a Sound Blaster. I've loved Tchaikovsky ever since.

I wrote an extensive article about the Mac Mini G4 as a retro-gaming machine.

For me it is near perfect as it is able to run almost anything from the late 80s up to early 2000s. And it has a very reduced footprint and can be easily plugged into modern display 🙂

This article also expose some technical aspects such as the way PowerPC Mac OS machines could ran 680x0 software and delves into the history of PowerPC until the G4.
