In Toronto a few months ago, I met a young man from Iran whose protests cost him his college degree. Since then, I have been researching how to help student protesters return to campus. Initially, my thoughts were with young people in Hong Kong, Iran, and China. I’ve never had many illusions about the system I myself live in. However, what is currently happening in the US, and the cruelty shown by university administrators and boards towards our own students, still leaves me speechless.

But I cannot stress to me how important it is for me that the voice of racial equality and global solidarity by the Chinese--widely existing, much more than the West is aware of-- to be heard, clearly and loudly.

Many English language news coverages emphasized the more familiar names such as Beijing University and Tsinghua, but the students in Nanjing and other parts of China are equally, if not more, courageous, creative, and resilient.
Never been so proud of being Chinese. Thank you for doing what my generation failed to do.

It is important to stress that the LGBTQ+ community stood at the forefront of the mass protests in China, just like they did in so many other protests for a just world.

So sad that I am in the middle of a semester and do not have time to learn to start/maintain an instance.
I never believe that decentralized social media networks are inadequate compared to Twitter in moments like this. But the current situation adds another example of the importance of decentralization.

University admin, faculty members, and lawmakers in countries of liberal democracy, please START to talk about how to enable international students who lost their university certificates due to activism to continue their studies.
China and Iran all dispelled young activists from universities as a key measure (other than imprisonment) to ruin their future and scare other university students.
These kids are the light of our global community.

Greatly moved to hear young Chinese chanting "Stand with Iran", "Stand with Ukrain", "End (Uyghur) Concentration Camp", and "Free China".
These protestors understand the global implication of authoritarianism.
I hope those of us who are not in/from China also take some time and effort to understand how remarkable it is for Chinese people to hold up universal values, considering how relentlessly the CCP defamed universal values for years.

Our university community could do more to provide emotional and moral support to international students from China.
When China issued the National Security Law, universities in the first world, many of which have relied on Chinese tuition for the loss of domestic public funding, basically threw faculty members who teach China and Chinese students under the bus.

I remember my tears when I saw photographs of Hong Kong protesters holding up blank paper together in 2020.
Probably started with one protest in Nanjing holding a blank A4 paper in hand, protests in Shanghai on Saturday night held up blank A4 paper, and the lights on police cars made them the most beautiful display of anger, mourning, and resistance.
Protests all over China and abroad now, individuals or groups, are holding up blank A4 paper.

I cannot stress how touched I am. What we Han people have done to the Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other communities cannot be corrected by simple gestures such as playing a song.
But this is a rare moment when there IS solidarity. Give me hope that reconciliation might one day happen

zoom event on China and Canada: Nov 16, 8-9pm ET
Helping a colleague to promote a worthy event at the UofT. I really like the fact that it is multidisciplinary, not just political science but also journalism and history.
"This panel brings together diverse voices to discuss how Chinese in Canada have historically been treated, and what lessons there are for people-to-people exchange today."
Help to boost appreciated.

I knew the existence of alt-text when I joined Mastodon, but in the other instances I was on, the use of it was uneven. It also shows my insensitivity and ignorance that I did not embrace it more consistently right away. But the research admin of scholar.social, our amazing @researchfairy, took my post down and asked me to repost with alt-text. I was both tremendously ashamed and GRATEFUL.
I rarely forgot ever since. Ignorance could be overcome.
Cannot believe I never wrote a proper #introduction. I work on #arthistory and #visualculture of #China. Currently writing a book on the history of #datavisualization in China. Interested in #ColdWar, #contemporaryart, and #photohistory, and working on a few #digitalhumanities projects.
I have been thinking a lot about what the recent call for #degrowth as the only ethical and sustainable way forward would mean for academia. Working toward care-centered knowledge production and dissemination.
