Since 80% of posts with the gamedev tag seem to come from mastodon.gamedev.place and I don't really post about ttrpg stuff anymore, I decided to switch to a new account at @yora@mastodon.gamedev.place

This lets me easily see the server feed for gamedev.place and I won't be swamping the dice.camp server feed with non-ttrpg posts.

I'll try to tag all my posts on the new account about my Kaendor videogame with #kaendor, so you can follow that if you don't want to follow my new account yet.

I'd love to talk with people about designing mechanics, environments, and gameplay for RPGs and hear about what other people are working on. (I think a forum would be ideal, but a Discord would be better than nothing.)

Red Dead Redeption 2, No Man's Sky, and Kingdom Come Deliverance were 6 years ago.

Horizon, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Breath of the Wild were 7 years ago.

Witcher 3 was 9 years ago.

Dragon Age Inquisition was 10 years ago.

GTA5 was 11 years ago.

Far Cry 3 was 12 years ago!

I guess no one can accuse you of jumping on the hype train starting work on an open-world RPG now. 😄

I think one thing that never felt quite right for me with first person RPGs is how the player's character always feels like such a non-entity with no traits and characteristics.

Though I wonder how much of that is because of those games' writing, which often deliberately aim for a blank slate character, rather than an effect of the character not being visible for most of the game.

Still swamped with work at my day job (and will be for another seven weeks) which keeps me from really getting into Godot.
But any #Kaendor videogame will certainly need a lot of custom or customized assets, so I'm going to have to learn Blender as well anyway. And that's something I can do for an hour after work every day. Feels fun so far, and I think reaching the level of detail of early 2000s games should be pretty quick. 😁

There are some merits to the common advice that beginners in creative arts should not discard the rules of established conventions until they really understand their purpose and can choose to not follow them with a deliberate plan.

But I think when it comes to #videogames #gamedev, simply putting mechanics into your game because all games in the genre have them, even though you don't see a purpose for them in your game, seems like a really bad idea.

I think I finally solved where my indecisiveness about making the #KaendorRPG a first person open world game or a top down party game comes from:

I first got the idea to make a game when RPG Maker was free on steam, and that's a 2D top down engine. When I decided to go with Godot instead, I still thought such game would be the easiest to make.

I still think of the games I was using as references for what could try as inspirations, even though most of my ideas are now something very different.
