My 2013 MacBook Pro was running an unsupported version of Mac OS (Catalina), and I didn't have enough disk space to upgrade to Big Sur (which will likely be dropped in a few months anyway), so I decided to install #Linux on my Mac. I went with #Pop_OS, and so far it has been great! My computer is running significantly faster, I have more free space than when I bought the mac a decade ago, and I have support for all the programs I use on a daily basis (VS Code, GIMP, Krita. Firefox, Spotify)

I'm super duper excited to have my first PR merged into Mastodon! This is my first time contributing to a major open source project. I guess I'm officially a #MastodonContributor now! 👨‍💻 (Even though this was a tiny bug, and my first fix attempt was wrong and ClearlyClaire actually came up with the solution.) It was fun to get a local development environment up and running and go through the process. It felt welcoming and like it was easy to contribute.

One thing I'm enjoying on Mastodon is the lists. I know this is a feature on twitter, but the fact that they are shown on the sidebar makes such a huge difference. Maybe it's also the fact that I'm being more intentional to add people as I'm following them this time.

It's definitely bittersweet. I've been on twitter for 15 years. I remember the magic of banging out tweets in T9 on my flip phone and texting them to the twitter line. I feel terrible for all the good folks working over there. On the other hand, I love the noncommercial nature of this platform, and the deemphasis on "doing numbers" and "virality". I'm also getting some schadenfreude watching the chief twit flailing and losing billions of dollars.

I still get value from twitter because of the number of local people there from my city, but if enough move to Mastodon, I could be done with twitter for good!
