But now we have a huge opportunity this year to try something bold on Valencia!

The initial plan was to put in the center-running bikeway for 18 months, study it for another 6 months, and hire a bunch of consultants to do traffic studies to consider maybe eventually trying something better

Now we've won real placemaking, with the Board directing staff to come back later this year ready to try bold designs on demonstration blocks of Valencia like one-way car traffic or pedestrianization with new public space

But I don't want to argue so much about bike lanes that we lose sight of the vision we all share as advocates for a bold people-first...

I want to be on a real path toward space for people. SFMTA meaningfully rebuilding trust and proving that they can get us there will go a long way toward assuaging the fear that we’ll be stuck with whatever the Board does next week

I hope that we can all agree on asking for that

Humbly, I suggest a placemaking process. Let's make creating space for people an explicit goal and try a new process to quickly redesign some blocks of Valencia

Any possible bikeway design will be significantly better with additional steps that take space away from cars and deter through traffic, and I want to make sure we get there
