Because of patterns like this, I think AI code generation *can* be beneficial, but only by *people who already know what they're doing* and can use it as an accelerator, and then have the discernment to judge whether the solution is right. As a sort of a boilerplate/template generator.

People without that critical understanding are doomed to appear efficient when "vibe coding", but while creating a sea of preventable problems. Useful? Perhaps. Better than the alternative? I'm not so sure.

Non-technical folks generating code with AI and assuming it's perfect is just an extension of an existing unfair situation: good engineering is invisible. *Preventing* issues (good architecture, good project hygiene, some amount of future-proofing, etc) is a thankless, artifact-less job.

I will never tire of linking people to this article analyzing a scene of Superman II (1980) to explain what it calls the "Preventable Problem Paradox". It's a beautiful illustration.

The sad part is that data persistence/restoration across devices is a basic part of the OS. It has been available for many years. It's easy to use.

But many apps basically opt out of it (or implement their own shitty device-specific data stores that circumvent it). So you end up with apps that have migration amnesia.

Interestingly, "big company" apps are the most common offenders. Small, well-crafted apps, many times OSS apps, usually just migrate seamlessly to a new device.

I got a new phone. I do that every 2-3 years or so.

It's something I absolutely hate to do, and I delay it as much as I can. I only got a new one because my phone screen was cracked and starting to malfunction.

I mostly hate it because, as an Android user, migrating phones is a PITA. There is some semblance of "migration" in the OS, but roughly 75% of the reinstalled apps lose their data. I have to spend days re-signing and re-doing settings. Good forbid I have to transfer files.

Since it's that time of the year... this mini-documentary on Jasmin Paris' historic finish at the 2024 Barkley Marathons is amazing:

Includes some fantastic footage from the race that I had never seen. Very emotional.

I'm starting to beta test a new mini game I'm developing (with friends) more publicly:

iconfound.me/

It's a Wordle-style game for 5-word cryptograms.

This might be a bit too early (I'm still a few weeks from "completion"). It's missing some layout tweaks, and about 50 other small "to-do" items.

But, it's fully functional already. Feedback appreciated!

(Yes, some puzzles/themes are a bit hard to grasp at the start. We'll do more gameplay-focused tests at some point).

More seriously, though, my first NYC Half was a great race. Got a nice PR (1h 34m).

The last 5k segment (15k-20k) was almost the same time as a previous 5k *race* from 2 years ago (~21:5x). Which is nuts to think about.

Felt strong from start to finish. Strong negative splits (from about 4:50/km to 4:00/km), somewhat forced by the crowded start. The end was pain, and all uphill too, but managed a good kick.

Very grateful overall!

Oh, and some photos are even OK.

Decades (!) ago I ran into a guy on Flickr who commented on people's pictures taken inside cars. He'd say something like "it's very important to wear your seatbelt on the back seat". His entire history was of comments like that.

At the time I thought it was just some crazy person; maybe he just had some accident history and wanted to warn people.

Now I'm the person who goes to race course discussions to say "tHaT eLeVaTiOn MaP iS iNcOrReCt" and I feel like I've turned into that guy
